What is intellectual property? Why do international IP rules exist? Why do UN bodies, such as WIPO, UNCTAD, and WHO have conflicting goals where intellectual property is concerned? How does IP law interact with new movements and practices such as on open innovation, access rights or the Creative Commons? Does the law truly incentivise and reward authors and inventors? Or is IP law an unjustified property tool for large corporations? By looking at national and global IP laws, the course gives a fundamental grounding in patents, copyright, trademarks, as well as international hybrid rights such as geographical indications, plant and seed protection, design, database, and personality rights.
