The Centre for Commercial Law Studies is pleased to invite you to the public lecture under the CCLS Commercial Law in China Series, delivered by Mr Huajun Liu, one of China’s most distinguished legal practitioners and scholars, on “Inspiration of Business Rules from the Judgment of Supreme People’s Court of China on Michael Jordan and Jia Duo Bao trademark cases”.

In the context of globalization, the maintenance of trademarks and commodity package and decoration are longstanding and critical concern for companies operating in China, especially for multinational corporations. By closely examining two recent judgments delivered by the Supreme People's Court of China in the Michael Jordan case and Jia Duo Bao v Wang Lao Ji, this lecture aims to provide practical advice and useful guidance in trademark management and protection to multinational corporations operating in China. The judgment provides useful guidance on legal issues related to trademark layout and licensing; the protection of commodity package and decoration and the safe operation of the multinationals in China. More specifically, the lecture looks at the current judicial practice related to trademarks that damage prior right, the protection of well-known commodity package and decoration.

About the speaker

Mr Huajun Michael Liu is the Chief Partner of Shanghai Justeam Law Firm, a certified Patent Agent in China who also holds the Certificate of Copyright Transaction. He is an Adjunct Professor of East China Normal University, a Research Associate at the Justice Studies Centre of Fudan University and a Side-bar LLM Supervisor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Mr Liu comes from both law and engineering background who serves as the legal and intellectual property Counsel in a Global 500 company; he had in the past dealt with hundreds of intellectual property cases. He is the draftsman of a number of prominent legal instruments in contemporary China including Shanghai Copyright Trading Market Regulation, the Administrative Measure on Shanghai Continental Internal Information Publication.
