Whaling is one of the most complex and divisive legal and ethical issues in contemporary world. It may be said that this a Gordian Knot untangling of which at the moment appears to be impossible. The issues of whaling, especially scientific whaling, have been a subject of the Whaling in Antarctic case of the International Court of Justice in 2014, which has resulted in an enhanced interest in whaling matters.
After the judgment, Japan announced a new whaling research plan New Scientific Research Programme in the Antarctic Ocean (NEWREP). In light of these new developments, the Department of Law at Queen Mary University of London is organising a panel discussion on the topic: ‘Japan Resumes its Scientific Whaling'.
