Navigating the Tech Maze: A qLegal Workshop for Women Entrepreneurs

Are you setting up a new business? Having some legal issues or concerns? Join us for a qLegal event dedicated to women entrepreneurs working in the tech industry!

Over the past ten years, the number of women in leading positions in the tech industry has remained roughly unchanged in the UK - 14 per cent since 2004. In the meantime, proof of gender diversity positive impact on companies’ success have become more evident.

The aim of this event is to sensitise women entrepreneurs to legal challenges, as we believe awareness to those issues is essential to maximize chances of success.

  • 7.00pm The Lifecycle of a Start-up: Which Key Legal Issues Should You Consider For Your Business?
    Sonia Girgis and Greg Joynson, Associates, Morrison & Foerster
    Greg is part of the Corporate department of Morrison & Foerster. He advises on a wide range of matters including public offerings, private financings and investment funds. He has worked for both private and public companies in the media, sport, banking and real estate industries.
    Sonia works in the Tax department of Morrison & Foerster, where she provides corporate tax advice on a wide range of issues, to private and public companies, both nationally and internationally. Ms Girgis was recently named "Rising Star: Tax" at the Euromoney European Women in Business Law Awards 2014.
    Sonia and Greg will present the key legal issues entrepreneurs should consider and address during the lifecycle of a start-up.
  • 7.30pm Testimonies of Female Entrepreneurs
    Tyriah Allison, is 12 years old and in Year 7. She has been programming for nearly four years and enjoys designing websites and mobile games. Tyriah has entered 6 Hackathons and won 3 of them. She has recently started her own tech business and was invited to join the Outbox Incubator this summer.
    Juliana Zarate (@JulianaZarate) and Shanshan Xu (@FoodNerdx), founders of Mucho! (Ex-Cookit), will tell us about their personal journey in the food tech industry. They will share their thoughts on joining an intensive program for women entrepreneurs, how they learned to pitch their company in seven words and overcome other challenges along the way, and what it was like to move to London after starting in the Silicon Valley!
  • 7.45pm Women in Tech Panel Discussion and Q&A
    Chaired by qLegal Coordinator Clemence Tanzi, this panel of female entrepreneurs and leaders will discuss their personal journey and experience in the tech industry. Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions and interact with our guests.

    • Susan McLean, Of Counsel, Morrison & Foerster, has 15 years of experience advising on a wide range of non-contentious technology matters, and was named as one of Innovate Finance's leading women in UK's FinTech sector in 2015.
    • Maria Shiao, Managing Director at Novus Ordo Capital Ltd, a VC which focuses on UK FinTech, smart energy and other sector affected by disruptive technologies. The firm encourages start-ups to have a commitment to gender diversity.
    • Octavia Goredema MBE, Founder, Twenty Ten Club and Twenty Ten Agency, an award winning international social enterprise committed to empowering black female entrepreneurs.
    • Lu Li, Founder of Blooming Founder (ex-femaleentrepreneurs.org), which provides support and training to female entrepreneurs to sustainably grow their company.
    • Catherine McClen, Founder and CEO of BuddyHub, which uses technology to help older people build their social networks and reconnect to their communities to tackle loneliness and isolation.
