Maximise Your Personal Effectiveness to Advance Your Career

15 March 2014

Time: 9:00am - 1:30pm
Venue: Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London, 67-69 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3JB

This workshop is designed to help young international lawyers increase their personal effectiveness and confidence as they make the transition between academic and professional work or seek to establish a legal career in the UK. This programme is led by Anne Flanagan and Pippa Heath. The workshop is open to Queen Mary School of Law postgraduate students only

It takes motivation and focus to have a satisfying and successful law career and indeed, life. It takes personal awareness and development to identify and become the kind of person and lawyer you want to be, as well as to identify and achieve your personal and professional goals that will enable you to do so. Only then can you build the habits, discipline and relationships necessary for this. This workshop is designed to help you begin to focus on these issues. Why is this important?

As one of the largest online employment sites has noted and which is reinforced by every legal employer we speak to:

"Having the right qualifications is one thing but, employers in the legal profession don’t just look for the brightest candidates with the most impressive academic credentials to their name. Of equal - some might say greater - importance are the personal qualities and skills that an individual must be able to demonstrate before any employer will open the door to your legal career."

This workshop is targeted at helping young international lawyers increase their personal effectiveness and confidence as they transition from academic studies to professional work and seek to establish a legal career, focusing on issues like identifying your personal ‘brand’ and cultivating that; becoming more effective at developing and fostering personal contacts and identifying the core personal skills that a law trainee might wish to cultivate.

The workshop, which starts at 9:30am and ends at 1:30 pm, is divided into three sessions. We are very pleased to have Aster Crawshaw from the law firm, Addleshaw Goddard and Sarah Hutchison from the University of Law who will explore the latter with a session on ‘A Day in the Life of a Trainee/Associate Attorney.’ Anne Flanagan and Pippa Heath will lead the sessions on individual branding and effective interpersonal skill enhancement.
