Notes from the meeting

This meeting has been organized by the Universities of Exeter and Bristol and the Criminal Justice Centre at Queen Mary University of London and is funded by the Economic & Social Research Council via the South West Doctoral Training Centre, to achieve the following objectives:

• Facilitate an exchange of expertise and views from a wide range of participants, in a neutral, private and invitation-only forum. Invitees include representatives from ACPO, the College of Policing and the Home Office; NGOs; lawyers representing individuals subject to Taser; the IPCC; academics working on use of force issues; Taser trainers and Single Points of Contact; DSTL and SACMILL; the Police Federation and Taser International representatives – for more detail please see the attached Invitees list.
• Provide an opportunity to reflect on, and contextualize, Taser policies, practices and experiences in England and Wales.
• Create an opportunity to collate disparate sources of expertise on Taser, and other less lethal technologies in the UK, that might otherwise be unavailable.
• Better understand the issues around Taser in the UK and provide an opportunity for broader debate around its acceptability in advance of the potential introduction of the ‘next generation’ of weapons.
