Judge, Jury and Occupier: Israel’s military courts in the occupied West Bank

When: Monday, March 29, 2021, 3:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Where: Online

Time zones: 3pm BST London, UK -- 10am DST New York/London, Ontario -- 5pm EEST Palestine

The International State Crime Initiative (School of Law, Queen Mary University of London) is delighted to host the launch of a new report from War on Want, with a discussion featuring legal experts on issues related to Israel’s system of military courts.

Judge, Jury and Occupier: Israel’s military courts in the occupied West Bank takes a deep look at Israel’s system of military courts, military orders, arrest, and detention, which Palestinians in the West Bank have been subjected to since the beginning of occupation. The report looks at the courts, not simply as a flawed judicial mechanism, but as an integral part of an illegal occupation. It also examines the historical and ongoing role of the UK in perpetuating occupation through its active support for Israel’s systematic abuse of Palestinian rights, and negligence of its legal and moral responsibilities in relation to the Palestinian people.

The discussion will feature Advocate Sahar Francis, Professor Michael Lynk, and Chi-Chi Shi, and will be chaired by Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian (Queen Mary). Together, they will examine Israel’s overarching system of military courts, exploring the ways in which it sustains and deepens Israel’s occupation.

Speakers

  • Advocate Sahar Francis is an attorney and Director of Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association; a Palestinian non-governmental, civil institution that works to support Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli and Palestinian prisons.
  • Professor Michael Lynk is United Nations Special Rapporteur for the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territory Occupied since 1967, and Associate Professor of Law at Western University in Canada.
