The Centre for Maritime Law (CML) of the National University of Singapore, the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), Queen Mary University of London, and the Marine and Shipping Law Unit within the TC Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland are launching an annual collaborative research event, the Global Shipping Law Forum.
The event will bring together academic researchers and legal practitioners from the shipping law field to discuss current issues of interest. The launch event, which will be hosted by the CML and will be held in Singapore on 7-8 December 2015, will be on "Indemnities and Guarantees in Maritime Law".
Subsequent events will be held in London, UK (December 2016) and Brisbane, Australia (December 2017).
Indemnities and guarantees are commonly found in domestic and international commercial transactions, including in the maritime context. Frequently tucked away in contract and commercial law courses, they have endured a similar fate in maritime law, often covered incidentally across different courses and texts on the carriage of goods by sea and admiralty courses, but rarely considered independently, across the subject or by reference to general principle. Problems and disputes abound in the maritime context.
This Forum considers the use and importance of indemnities and guarantees across the domain of maritime law and from both a common law and civil law perspective.
Attendance is by invitation only.
