As part of the 50 Year Anniversary of the School of Law, Queen Mary University of London, the Criminal Justice Centre presents a seminar series on Privacy in the Age of Mass Surveillance. This series is organised by Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas and Professor Elspeth Guild.
The seminar series aims to cast light on the transformation of privacy in the age of mass surveillance. Recent years have witnessed renewed efforts by States to collect personal data for counter-terrorism and crime control purposes. These efforts have led to a shift towards generalised, or blanket surveillance (with the aim being to collect personal data on all citizens, regardless of the existence of a suspicion of their involvement in a criminal offence); a shift towards privatised surveillance (with the state co-opting increasingly the private sector to undertake surveillance activities on its behalf); and a shift towards pre-emptive surveillance (where the collection of personal data occurs ex ante, for risk assessment purposes). By looking at legislative, judicial and policy developments in the field, the seminar series will explore the implications of these shifts on the fundamental rights of privacy and data protection and assess the adequacy of the current legal framework to address these challenges.
This seminar is on the subject of 'Transnational Order and Jurisprudence of Rights: Privacy at the US Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights'.
