About the speaker

Alberto Mazzoni is the President of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), founder and senior partner of the leading Italian law firm Mazzoni Regoli Cariello e Pagni and Professor Emeritus of Commercial Law at the Catholic University of Milan. From the beginning of his career he has combined professional practice with teaching and research at several Italian universities as well as research at the Goethe Universität in Frankfurt, the Faculté de Sciences Politiques in Paris and the Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, USA.

One of Italy’s leading commercial lawyers Professor Mazzoni is the author of two ground-breaking monographs dealing with minority shareholder’s protection in comparative law and letters of patronage, as well as numerous articles, including several published in English on cross-border insolvency of multinational groups of companies, third-party liability insurance in the insured’s bankruptcy and a global view of the social aspects of MSME insolvencies. He regularly acts as governmental expert heading the Italian delegation to working group and plenary sessions of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law and he has for many years been the Chairman of the internal pre-arbitral Tribunal of the Milan Stock Exchange, and he was for several years a member of the Arbitration Council of the Milan Chamber of Commerce and continues to be an active member of the Milan Club of Arbitrators. His areas of practice are wide-ranging and include company law, mergers and acquisitions, commercial contracts, banking, insolvency, antitrust law and arbitration, the last of these being his predominant current activity.

Professor Mazzoni’s inaugural lecture at the launch of the Queen Mary-UNIDROIT Institute of Transnational Commercial Law focuses on the tensions between international commercial law and State regulation , the importance of limiting the harmonisation of commercial law to instruments which accommodate the pragmatic approaches of the business community and the future development of non-State rules.
