This lecture, presented by Dr Jan Wouters, Full Professor of International Law and Jean Monnet Chair, KU Leuven, addresses some of the main legal and political issues that arise with regard to the re-definition of the UK’s relationship with the WTO.
Various scenarios currently circulate with regard to the way in which the UK will negotiate and implement its decision to withdraw from the EU. What is clear is that it will have to take care of its relationship with the WTO, of which it is has been one of the ‘original Members’, but – as an EU Member State – in the unique position that it does not have its own tariff schedules. What will need to be done within the WTO? The Director-General of the WTO, Roberto Azevêdo, has emphasized that “there is no precedent for a WTO member extricating itself from an economic union while inside the organisation” and expects negotiations to be “long and difficult”. This lecture addresses some of the main legal and political issues that arise with regard to the re-definition of the UK’s relationship with the WTO.
