About the Role
This is an Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) funded by Exactmer Ltd and Innovate UK.
Exactmer Ltd (https://exactmer.com/) is a life science company specialised in the synthesis of biopolymers (e.g. oligonucleotides, peptides) and synthetic polymers (e.g. polyethylene glycols) using its patented Nanostar Sieving Technology, which allows the synthesis of polymers with exactly defined monomer sequences in liquid phase. Exactmer produces polymers of unprecedented precision by using this new approach, opening the way to manufacture at scale supremely accurate polymers for use as pharmaceuticals, drastically reducing drug manufacturing costs.
The successful candidate will seek to develop the chemistry for iterative chain extension of polyethylene glycols (PEGs), purifying the growing polymers by organic solvent nano-filtration. This involves growing the polymers on a soluble hub molecule, to which two or more growing polymers are attached. The Associate will synthesise hub molecules through repeated coupling, deprotections reactions and membrane separations on 1-10 g scale. They will analyse the growing polymer chain using UPLC-MS, GPC, NMR and other techniques. They will work on applications of these polymers in drug PEGylation and Antibody-drug constructs.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in organic chemistry, and/or polymer synthesis, and possess a thorough knowledge of protecting group strategies and functional group interconversions. Experience of bio-conjugation chemistry would also be useful, and fluent understanding of analytical skills with HPLC, MS and NMR will be relevant. They should also be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent electronic record-keeping and adherence to safety codes and protocols are essential.
For further details of the role and selection criteria please refer to the job specification document.
We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. The post is based 80% of the time at Exactmer (Londoneast-uk Business and Technical Park, Dagenham, RM10 7FN) and 20% of the time at- Queen Mary’s Mile End Campus in London. It is full time (35 hours per week), fixed term appointment for 2 years, with an expected start date of no later than 1st January 2023. The starting salary will be Grade 5, in the range of £39,815-£46,843 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
