Research

Our methodological research covers the design, conduct and analysis of evaluative studies, mostly clinical trials, and this includes work on methodological and applied research in cluster randomised trials and stepped wedge designs, pilot and feasibility studies, trials using cohorts and routine health data, and best practice in the design, analysis and reporting of trials. Other methodological research covers health economic assessment, evidence synthesis, decision-analytic modelling, and generic health-related quality of life.

The Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit undertakes collaborative applied research in many areas but particularly primary care, mental health, respiratory health, women’s health, bowel surgery, critical and peri-operative care, and orthopaedics.

The Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research Methodology Platform undertakes methodological research focused on asthma.

The NIHR Research Design Service provides support and advice to researchers in all areas of health and social care who want to apply for public and charitable funding for their research.
