Postgraduate Research English Language Requirements

All students must meet English language entry requirements for all programmes of study at QMUL. The Academic IELTS requirement for every Postgraduate degree programme is published below, according to the academic department within which your chosen course of study is administered.

You may produce alternative qualifications to demonstrate your level of English Language proficiency. The qualification must be equivalent to the corresponding IELTS requirement.

If you will require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must meet the minimum English Language requirements to meet the UKVI regulations. The minimum requirement is 5.5 in all four skills of IELTS, or equivalent in other qualifications (although many of our courses require higher grades).

If you fall slightly below our standard English language requirements, you may consider one of our Pre-sessional English courses. Please note that you will require a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) for entry to pre-sessional courses. Only IELTS for UKVI and Trinity ISE are currently accepted. The Pre-sessional English course requirements are also published below, according to the academic department within which your chosen course of study is administered.

Approved English language tests must have been taken within two years of the proposed course start date.

Postgraduate guidelines

If you hold a degree from a majority English speaking country plus Canada you may use this degree to satisfy the English language requirements for entry, provided the degree was completed no more than 5 years before the start date of the course to which you are applying.

If a first degree is taught for at least 2 years fully in English, and no more than 5 years have passed since the student was taught in English, the Admissions office can consider the degree for English language acceptability. These degrees will be considered on a case by case basis. Students will need to supply an academic transcript and confirmation letter from central university administration confirming the course is taught and examined in English for at least 2 years.

Degree programmes which are taught for 2 years in one country and two years in another country are acceptable only where degree is conferred by an UK institution.

Other qualifications may be taken into consideration for meeting the English language requirements and will be assessed on an individual basis.

For further queries regarding acceptable English language qualifications, please contact the Admissions team directly via email to pgtadmissions@qmul.ac.uk
