Welcome programme

Welcome to Queen Mary!

For over 30 years, we’ve welcomed students from around the world who have come to study on our short-term programmes. We have a great deal of experience in making you feel at home and ensuring that you make the most of your time studying in London. We aim to provide you with everything you need to make you comfortable and make your time with us a success. We want you to feel that Queen Mary is your London home.

We support you before you arrive, throughout your studies and then as valued alumni. Our dedicated, friendly Global Opportunities team is here to help you with any questions you might have and support you while you study with us.

Before you arrive

We will send you all the essential pre-arrival information and give you step-by-step help and advice on getting ready to join us at Queen Mary in plenty of time before you join us, so you feel confident about living and studying in London.

Arrival Guide – Your handbook to getting to grips with life at Queen Mary

Once you arrive at Queen Mary

Our Welcome Programme is designed to make you feel at home as soon as you arrive in the UK. We’ll give you practical advice about living and studying in London (and optional social events, such as a boat cruise down the River Thames, so you can relax and meet with your fellow students).

Our Welcome programme

  • We will collect you from the airport

  • We organise plenty of social events so you can meet your fellow exchange students and start making friends as soon as you arrive

  • Our two-day orientation programme of Welcome Talks will answer any questions you have about living or studying at Queen Mary

  • Some of our academic schools run their own induction sessions – You’ll get email invitations to these events before you travel

  • Our Students’ Union, QMSU, organises a jam-packed week of welcome events (and will introduce you to their societies and clubs)

  • You’ll have our continual support while you are with us: we arrange events for you throughout the year and send regular GO newsletters that will tell you about any upcoming events (or deadlines…) on campus and in London.

Welcome Talks

These talks form part of your orientation programme and introduce you to living and studying in the UK and Queen Mary. We will run workshops and presentations with lots of useful information: from finalising your modules, getting around London, where to buy food, keep fit, as well as health and safety advice.

We also organise plenty of social events as part of your orientation. These events often sell out so you should buy your tickets online before you leave for the UK. (You’ll receive more details about this in your Countdown newsletters.)

Queen Mary also hosts a Welcome Week for all of our international students at the start of the academic year in September. Watch our Welcome Week video

Free airport collection from Heathrow Airport

You’ll want to be greeted by friendly faces when you arrive in the UK. We arrange a free Queen Mary bus service for all new international students who arrive at Heathrow on our specified arrival dates (We’ll give you more information about this before you need to book your flight: unfortunately, we can’t collect you from the airport on other dates or from other airports). You must book your place on this bus. If you don’t book your seat, we can’t guarantee that there will be one for you.

If you have to travel outside our arrival dates or from other airports, visit our How To Find Us page to plan your journey to Queen Mary.

Our airport collection service is for Queen Mary students only. Family or friends are welcome to travel on the coach but only if there are spaces available (our students always have priority) If a coach is full, Queen Mary staff will give your family or friends directions to campus and suggest the best alternative transport.
