Foundation and Pre-Masters English Language Requirements

All students must meet English language entry requirements for all programmes of study at QMUL. The Academic IELTS requirement for all of our Foundation (including integrated foundation programmes) and Pre-Master programmes are published below, according to the academic department within which your chosen course of study is administered.

If you will require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must meet the minimum English Language requirements to meet the UKVI regulations. For applicants to Undergraduate courses, the minimum requirement is 5.5 in all four skills of IELTS, or equivalent in other qualifications (although many of our courses require higher grades.)

If you fall slightly below our standard English language requirements, you may consider one of our Pre-sessional English courses. Please note that you will require a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) for entry to pre-sessional courses. Only IELTS for UKVI and Trinity ISE are currently accepted. Where applicable, the Pre-sessional English course requirements are also published below, according to your chosen course of study.

Approved English language tests must have been taken within two years of the proposed course start date.

Business Management Programmes with Integrated Foundation Year 

The minimum English Language requirements for entry to all undergraduate Business and Management degree programmes with an integrated Foundation year are published below. This includes the following courses; 

  • Business Management with Integrated Foundation Year (including Year Abroad option)

We also accept alternative qualifications at the relevant level to meet our English Language Requirements.

IELTS: a minimum overall score of 6.0 including a minimum of 5.5 in Writing, and no less than 5.5 in Reading, Listening and Speaking. 
TOEFL: a minimum overall score of 79 including a minimum of 17 in Writing, and no less than 18 in Reading, 17 in Listening and 20 in Speaking.
PTE Academic: a minimum overall score of 57 including a minimum of 51 in Writing, and no less than 51 in Reading, Listening and Speaking.
Trinity ISE: Trinity ISE II with a minimum of Merit in Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking. 
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): a minimum overall score of 169 including a minimum of 162 in Writing, and no less than 162 in Reading, Listening and Speaking.
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): a minimum overall score of 169 including a minimum of 162 in Writing, and no less than 162 in Reading, Listening and Speaking.  

If you fall below our standard English Language requirements, you may consider our Foundation Pre-Sessional English course. If you are an International student and require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you will require a UK government approved secure English Language Test for entry to the Pre-Sessional course. Only IELTS for UKVI and Trinity ISE are currently accepted. 

Foundation Pre-Sessional 

IELTS: a minimum overall score of 5.5 including a minimum of 5.0 in Writing. 

Trinity ISE: Trinity ISE II with a minimum of Pass in Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking. 

This is a nine week Pre-Sessional programme - no other Pre-Sessional programme is offered for this course.

Economics Programmes with Integrated Foundation Year 

The minimum English Language requirements for entry to all undergraduate Economics degree programmes with an integrated Foundation year are published below. This includes the following courses; 

  • Economics with Integrated Foundation Year (including Year Abroad option)

  • Economics, Finance and Management with Integrated Foundation Year (including Year Abroad option)

International Science and Engineering Foundation Programme 

The minimum English Language requirements for entry to the International Science and Engineering Foundation (ISEFP) programmes is published below. If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must meet the minimum English Language requirements to meet the UKVI regulations and you will require a UK government approved Secure English Language test (SELT) for entry to the course. 

IELTS: a minimum overall score of 5.0 including a minimum of 5.0 in Writing, and no less than 5.0 in Reading, Listening and Speaking. 

No Pre-Sessional English course is offered for this programme.

Students who intend to apply for undergraduate degrees at high ranking universities after completing the ISEFP, or for degrees which have a high number of applicants such as Biomedical Sciences, are advised to achieve an English proficiency score of IELTS 6.0 including 6.0 in Writing (or equivalent) before starting the ISEFP.

The minimum English Language requirements for entry to the International Foundation Programme (IFP) programmes in the following disciplines are published below; 

  • International Foundation Programme in Humanities and Social Sciences
  • International Foundation Programme in Business Management

If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must meet the minimum English Language requirements to meet the UKVI regulations and you will require a UK government approved Secure English Language test (SELT) for entry to the course.

IELTS: a minimum overall score of 6.0 including a minimum of 5.5 in Writing, and no less than 5.5 in Reading, Listening and Speaking. 
Trinity ISE: Trinity ISE II with a minimum of Merit in Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking. 

Foundation Pre-Sessional 

IELTS: a minimum overall score of 5.5 including a minimum of 5.0 in Writing. 

Trinity ISE: Trinity ISE II with a minimum of Pass in Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking. 

This is a nine week Pre-Sessional programme - no other Pre-Sessional programme is offered for this course.

Some IFP subjects are only open to students with higher IELTS scores:

  • For Literature, you will need an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or above (or equivalent).
