Queen Mary introduces accommodation guarantee for first-year undergraduate students
All first-year undergraduates starting at Queen Mary in September 2018 who meet our eligibility criteria will be guaranteed accommodation if they firmly accept their offer to study in London and apply for accommodation by Thursday 31 May. Please let any applicants and/or offer-holders know, as this could be instrumental in their choice of university and particularly in placing us as their firm choice.
Information can be found at www.qmul.ac.uk/undergraduate/whyqm/accommodation, along with a link to the Residential Services and Support website for full details. It is anticipated that the accommodation application process will open in early March. |

New partnership with Huawei to launch UK ICT Academy advisory board
Queen Mary has partnered with Huawei, a leading global telecommunications firm, to help students become employment ready. Professor Edmund Burke, Vice-Principal for Science and Engineering, said: “The fast pace of change in technology means that the education of the next generation is very important, and collaborations like this mean that we can give students the best start in their careers. Extensive archive of St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College now available to researchers
Highlights include rarely seen material concerning the Medical College’s acquisition of the Charterhouse Square premises in the 1930s and bomb damage during the Blitz, records of numerous student clubs and societies illustrating social life and entertainment from the 1860s to 1990s, and comprehensive files on the ‘BLQ Project’ which ultimately led to the creation of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Celebrating Global Challenges Research Fund successes
Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry held an event to celebrate its Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) successes in helping to tackle problems faced by developing countries. The event, ‘GCRF - A year on’, was held at the Queen Mary Bioenterprises Innovation Centre, bringing together academics from across the university. Since the launch of the GCRF scheme at the end of 2015, our researchers have been involved in winning over £10m in GCRF funding. More.
IT Services featured in Jisc case study
Jisc provides UK universities and colleges with shared digital infrastructure and services. They recently featured a case study on how our IT Services worked to deliver seamless access to UK-hosted course materials for our students and staff on joint programmes in China.

2018 Academic Promotions Round now open
Eligible academic staff can apply for promotion to senior lecturer, reader or professor. Applications should be returned to your Head of School/Institute Director no later than Wednesday 31 January. Increase to procurement thresholds for purchasing goods and services
Procurement has reviewed and benchmarked the thresholds for competitive exercises (quotes and tender). It has been decided to raise the thresholds to take into account the increase in cost of goods and services. The increased thresholds will provide greater flexibility and help to ensure value for money, while making it easier and quicker to purchase goods and services. More.
Restricted access at Mile End campus as work commences on Mathematical Sciences building
Pedestrian access to Godward Square (sometimes known as Drapers Square) from Mile End Road will be closed from this week until completion of the refurbishment of the Mathematical Sciences building in April 2019. More.
L'Oréal-UNESCO UK and Ireland Fellowships For Women in Science – 2018 applications now open
L’Oréal will be awarding five outstanding female early-career scientists a bursary of £15,000. Fellowships are open to female early-career researchers working in the field of life and physical sciences, engineering, mathematics and computer sciences. Researcher Development Fund – new grant call for Postdocs and research staff
The Life Sciences Initiative and the Researcher Development team are looking to fund exciting and innovative projects or initiatives from groups or individuals that seek to promote their own and others’ career development. Deadline for applications is Wednesday 7 February. They are also looking for postdoctoral researchers who want experience in participating in these funding decisions to join the decision panel. The Steering Group of the LGBTQ Out network invites old and new members for tea and biscuits to discuss the way forward for the group. Training and development opportunities
- It's Professional Development’s ‘Week of Learning’. Sessions include time management, social media, coaching taster sessions and discovering personal strengths. Please come along to one of the lunchtime drop-in sessions taking place across the Mile End, West Smithfield and Whitechapel campuses until this Friday, 12 January.
- The call for participation in the postdoc mentoring scheme closes this Friday, 12 January. It is open to all postdoctoral staff, across all faculties, who identify as academic researchers (irrespective of your contract type). Those who will have completed their PhD study by the end of January, and will be staying on at QMUL for postdoctoral work, can also participate. The Researcher Development team is also looking for members of academic staff who are willing to mentor a researcher or a small group of postdocs over the course of the next year.
- Join the Centre of the Cell’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) ambassadors programme and engage with schoolchildren during their 90-minute ‘pod’ shows to help explain the games, share career advice and inspire the next generation of scientists.
