Professor Nick Lemoine receives China’s highest award for foreign experts
Congratulations to Professor Nick Lemoine, Director of Barts Cancer Institute, who has been awarded the China Friendship Award - the country’s highest award for "foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country's economic and social progress".
On receiving the award, he said: “For me to receive this National Friendship award is a great recognition of the research achievements by the teams at Queen Mary and the Academy of Medical Sciences at Zhengzhou University. I am also very proud and honoured to have been elected as a Chinese Academician at the same time as Bill Gates, Dame Ann Dowling and Leo Rafael Reif.” More.

The story of Joseph Merrick re-told in an immersive Whitechapel tour app
‘I am Human’ retells the story of The Royal London Hospital and Medical College’s most famous resident through the eyes of Merrick himself. The free audio guide has no narration, and instead brings 1880s Whitechapel to life through the voices of Merrick, the celebrity surgeon Frederick Treves, the resourceful young Matron, Eva Luckes, and a medical student training at the College. Dr Mariana Pinto da Costa presents Erasmus+ Generation Declaration at European Commission
Dr Mariana Pinto da Costa, a PhD student at QMUL’s Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry, was invited to present the Erasmus+ Generation Declaration at the European Commission, together with the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Tibor Navracsics. It took place during the closing session to mark the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus programme. More.

Panos Deloukas is Professor of Cardiovascular Genomics in the William Harvey Research Institute and is co-lead of the Life Sciences Initiative (LSI) Centre for Genomics Health. In October he took up the position of Dean for Life Sciences and will be spending half his working week on strategy and operational issues associated with the post. More.

Car parking renewal for Mile End car park
To apply for your 2018 staff car parking permits, please visit staff at Queens’ Building reception, Mile End from Monday 11 December between 11am and 3pm. Please be aware that due to reception being busy at times, the permit may not be ready for collection until the following working day. More information about parking on campus is available on the Security webpages.
Giving Month raises £80,000
The Alumni and Development team would like to thank everyone who supported this year’s Giving Month, which helped to raise £80,000 for the Annual Fund. The money raised will help to fund more hardship bursaries for the students who really need your help to get through university. One bursary can make all the difference for someone: a year’s worth of books, a travel card to get to and from classes or even more basic things like a weekly shop and rent. Apple security update for macOS High Sierra
If you’re running macOS High Sierra on your Mac, please update it as soon as possible if you haven’t done so already. A bug was discovered that makes it possible to gain entry to the machine without a password. Apple has released the fix for this bug and more information is available on the IT Services status page.
Explore QMUL: Centre of the Cell and Blizard Institute laboratories
There’s still time to register for the free Explore QMUL tour of the Centre of the Cell and Blizard Institute laboratories next Wednesday, 13 December, 1–2pm. Walk around containment level 1 laboratories and hear about current research projects at the Institute. Centre of the Cell’s learning and outreach officers will then showcase the award-winning pod and the unique, interactive educational games it has to offer. Register via Eventbrite. The Institute of Dentistry is looking for volunteers (non-smokers aged 18-30) to help with a study looking at the daily use of a lozenge containing a food supplement for the maintenance of a healthy mouth. ‘Tis the season
- The Chaplaincy, together with the QMUL Nursery children and QMUL Chamber Ensemble invite everyone to a good old fashioned sing-along community carol service this Friday, 8 December, 4pm in the Octagon, Queens’ Building, Mile End. This will be followed by mulled wine, hot chocolate and other Christmas treats.
- Barts and The London Music Society’s Christmas concert will take place this Friday, 8 December, 7pm at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, E1 0NR. All are invited to attend this traditional service of readings and carols, with music from the choir and orchestra.
