Mental Health Awareness Week at QMUL
To mark Mental Health Awareness Week 2017, QMUL’s Diversity and Inclusion team and Occupational Health Service will be holding a series of workshops and confidential consultations between Thursday 4 and Friday 12 May. The theme this year is ‘Surviving or thriving?’. Workshops will be run by Innerspace, a meditation and personal development centre in Covent Garden. The aim is to encourage the QMUL community to talk more openly about the issues relating to mental health, as well as help people think about their own mental wellbeing. Find out more and register.

The event on Monday 12 June will be an informal occasion to mark Simon’s retirement, and for Simon to thank everyone at Queen Mary. Further information on the event and how to RSVP will be shared in due course.
QMUL researchers to take science to the pub with Pint of Science London
More than 30 QMUL scientists will appear in local watering holes as the world's largest festival of public science talks returns to London between Monday 15 and Wednesday 17 May. London will join over 100 cities around the world taking part in this global festival highlighting recent scientific breakthroughs. More.
Mindfulness Matters: a non-faith event for all staff
Dr Fatimah Awan and Dr Dominic Hurst would like to form a group for QMUL staff in which individuals are given time and space for themselves, as well as the opportunity to meet with others of a like mind. To kick off the group, they have asked three speakers – Dr Jenny Chamarette (Academic Lead for Equality and Diversity at QMUL), Marcia Bennett-Pompey (Occupational Health Manager) and the Reverend Ella Sharples (Mindfulness Organiser) – to speak on Wednesday 10 May from 1-1.30pm in St Benet’s Chaplaincy, Mile End campus, followed by tea and coffee. CLSGC/IHSS joint lecture: Constitutional Panics and Imperial Power
The Centre for Law and Society in a Global Context (CLSGC) and the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) are holding a joint lecture by Lauren Benton, titled ‘Constitutional Panics and Imperial Power’. It takes place on Wednesday 17 May, 6.30pm in the Peston Lecture Theatre, Graduate Centre, Mile End campus. The event will be chaired by Dr Maks Del Mar, and will be followed by a drinks reception. Centre of the Cell May half-term events
Centre of the Cell’s half-term events this May are ‘Gut Feeling’ and ‘War on the Wards’, and both include a visit to the cell-shaped pod suspended over the Blizard Institute laboratories. Find out more and book on the Centre of the Cell website. QMUL staff qualify for a concession-priced ticket. Please note that children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult (aged 16 and over) at all times.
Research Matters: changing lives in east London and beyond
The free event from Barts Health NHS Trust and the School of Medicine and Dentistry will feature talks from award-winning academics and clinicians, patients and others, to showcase high-quality clinical research and engage patients, families, carers and community leaders to act as research champions and encourage greater participation and involvement in healthcare research. It takes place on Wednesday 24 May, 5-7.30pm in the Perrin Lecture Theatre, Blizard Institute, Whitechapel campus.
Grand Round: 'An End to Gardening'
The seminar will be given by Dr M Wilks and Dr J Lambourne on Thursday 4 May at 12.15pm in the Morris Lecture Theatre in the Robin Brook Centre at the West Smithfield campus, with lunch served beforehand. Please contact Will Drake for further information.

Nominations for external guests to be invited to QMUL’s Guest Night 2017 have been extended until Friday 12 May. All staff are encouraged to submit nominations. Although all nominations are welcome and will be considered, this list of past nominations may be useful as a guide.
Festival of Ideas – your help needed
QMUL’s first Festival of Ideas aims to encourage colleagues to come together to celebrate and explore the huge variety of exciting and interesting research going on at Queen Mary. EU referendum: practical workshops to support permanent residency and naturalisation applications
Following the triggering of Article 50 and in response to requests from EU staff, Human Resources has organised practical workshops to support our EU staff and students through their own application process for permanent residency and naturalisation as a British Citizen.
Appraisal round 2017 now open
The appraisal cycle runs until Monday 31 July, and everyone is encouraged to put time in the calendar now for appraisal conversations. This is an important exercise that encourages useful conversations on individual progress on work goals as well as personal development. More.

Last chance to submit your award-winning life sciences image
The deadline for the Life Sciences Image Awards has been extended until this Friday at 5pm. With some fantastic entries already submitted, don't miss the opportunity to share your view of life sciences. The competition is looking for entries under the themes of Health and Wellbeing, Health and Technology, and Beauty in Medicine. Shortlisted entries will be shown at a public exhibition in Whitechapel, with the winner receiving an iPad.
