The Festival of Communities welcomes over 3,000 people to explore living and learning in Tower Hamlets
On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 May, over 3,000 people experienced more than 80 stalls, demonstrations and activities featuring QMUL staff and students alongside local organisations and charities. The varied programme featured family activities and community conversations together with opportunities to actively contribute to current QMUL research. We worked closely with local organisations and community groups to offer something for everyone and the feedback received so far has been very positive, including comments such as “it makes me proud to live in a borough with a university” and “there’s lots of great research going on here that can benefit the community”.
The festival launched on Wednesday 17 May with a celebration of community, bringing together those living and working in Tower Hamlets to exchange experiences, ideas and celebrate outstanding examples of collaborative community projects involving QMUL staff and students. Academic and professional services staff were recognised along with students in eight different community engagement categories. More details on the winning projects can be found here.
You can find out more about the Festival of Communities and Community Engagement Awards on the festival microsite. Plans are already underway for next year's festival, so if you'd like to get involved please get in touch via communityengagement@qmul.ac.uk. |

QMUL professor appointed National Clinical Advisor to the NHS
Congratulations to Professor Adrian Newland who has been appointed as the National Clinical Advisor to the NHS. Professor Newland held the position of President of the Royal College of Pathologists from 2005 to 2008, a position which is next to be held by Professor Joanne Martin, also from QMUL. This will mean that members of Queen Mary hold the two most senior posts in pathology in the UK. Professor Newland also notes that of the last seven presidents of the Royal College of Pathology, three have been staff at Queen Mary, with two others having been undergraduates and trained here – a tribute to the standing of pathology within the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
QMUL awarded over €1m of Erasmus+ funding
Over 300 QMUL students and staff will be able to benefit from EU grants for an Erasmus+ mobility to Europe and beyond. As well as continuing to coordinate the European student and staff mobility exchanges, the Global Opportunities Office will now embark on a two-year Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility project to deliver exchanges with partner universities in China, Columbia, India, Israel, Mexico, Russia and Uganda.
