QMUL takes part in Shanghai University of Finance and Economics’ (SUFE) centenary celebrations
The anniversary celebrations took place in Shanghai on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 November. SUFE is the partner of QMUL’s Confucius Institute, which launched in September 2015 with an aim to strengthen educational, cultural and business links between London and Shanghai, two leading financial centres.
Professor Kathryn Richardson, Director of QMUL’s Confucius Institute, commented on the partnership: “QMUL’s Confucius Institute facilitates academic collaborations and joint research between our two institutions, particularly in the areas of finance, economics, business and law. We also organise staff visits and summer camps at SUFE each year for our QMUL students. We are delighted to help SUFE celebrate their 100th anniversary.” More. |

Second open call launched for €2.4m competition to create sustainable and ethical wearable technologies
WEAR Sustain is a collaboration between seven organisations across Europe including Queen Mary. Rachel Lasebikan, Senior Research and Innovation Manager in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, said: "Our awardees are creating prototypes for air pollution, circular design in production and recycling, reuse of electronic components, health, stress, biodegradation, human impact and more. We are looking for new applications that propose valuable solutions to real problems.” More. |

Sustainability team highly commended at Green Gown Awards 2017
Congratulations to the Sustainability team who received a Highly Commended award in the Sustainability Reporting category at the Green Gown Awards 2017 held on Wednesday 15 November by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges. The team were also finalists in the new Employability category. |

Joint scholarships for Chilean postgraduates
Students from Chile will be eligible for fully funded scholarships to study at Queen Mary, thanks to a new partnership with the Chilean government. Principal Professor Colin Bailey said: “We are delighted to be expanding our links in Chile and Latin America, and to grow our already thriving community of Latin American students. This new scholarship is particularly exciting because it will enable students to study across the whole spectrum of academic disciplines at Queen Mary.” More.

QMUL joins ‘Go International: Stand Out’ campaign
Universities UK International has launched ‘Go International: Stand Out’, a new campaign to help the higher education sector increase the percentage of students participating in study, work and volunteer abroad placements. QMUL’s pledge commits to increase the number of students we send overseas, widen participation of our student demographic in outward mobility, provide more funding and support for disadvantaged student groups and to create more opportunities for students to go abroad as part of existing programmes. Professor Michael Braden
It is with great sadness we report the death of our former colleague Professor Michael Braden, who passed away on Wednesday 22 November. Professor Ferranti Wong, Interim Dean for Dentistry said: "His scientific contributions were legendary. He will be greatly missed by all his colleagues, collaborators and students, past and present, as the most helpful, friendliest, selfless and kindest polymath they ever encountered; his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.” More.
