Last chance – prizes available for community-based projects

Applications are open until 10am next Monday, 3 April, for the QMUL Community Awards to celebrate projects working with communities, whether local, national or international, across six award categories.

Whether you involve communities with research, student activity or professional services, the awards are a chance to have your work showcased and rewarded, with winners announced at a public ceremony launching the Tower Hamlets Festival of Communities this May. Apply now here.

Dr Hetta Howes named as BBC ‘broadcaster of the future’

Congratulations to Dr Hetta Howes, Lecturer in Medieval Literature in the School of English and Drama, who has been selected as a BBC New Generation Thinker – a mentorship scheme for ‘broadcasters of the future’ jointly run by BBC Radio 3 and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The judges chose 10 early career academics from a nationwide pool of candidates, whose research will be made into radio and television programmes for the BBC. More.

QMUL students present their research in Parliament

Samuel Mathews and Angelica Hill enjoyed a day in the Houses of Parliament where they presented their research at the Posters in Parliament event on Tuesday 14 March, alongside 52 undergraduates from over 20 UK universities. Sam, an MSci student in the School of Physics and Astronomy talked about his research into the evaluation of Saturn's F rings. Angelica, a third year from the School of English and Drama, talked about her research into the denigration of 'others' in relation to the image of the English male and ‘Englishness’ in Shakespeare’s Henry VI trilogy. QMUL joins the Science and Engineering South Consortium

QMUL has recently joined the Science and Engineering South Consortium (SES), joining other consortia members including King’s College London, The University of Southampton, University College London, The University of Oxford, and Imperial College London. Professor William Spence, Vice-Principal (Research), said: “We very much look forward to being a part of the consortium – fresh collaboration and sharing arrangements will offer significant new opportunities to us at QMUL and add to the existing range of joint work with our partners”. QMUL professor selected as NIHR senior investigator

Congratulations to Professor Sandra Eldridge from the Centre for Primary Care and Public Health, who has been selected as a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) senior investigator. Sandra’s success in this highly competitive process means that she will become a member of the NIHR College of around 200 senior investigators, charged with helping to shape and influence the future direction of health research and its benefits to the nation.

Queen Mary hosts TNE roundtables on moving toward informed choice advising

Gulshin Ijaz from Human Resources joined forces with HEGlobal and the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) to run roundtable sessions across the country to consider the 'human' aspects of transnational education (TNE). The purpose was to identify key 'people' issues relating to working overseas, with the aim to develop resources to support the sector. More.

Is your staff ID card working?

A number of staff ID cards have been deactivated from the access control system due to a technical error. If you experience issues when swiping your card to access areas on campus you normally have access to, please contact Security on x5000.

Introducing the IT Service Desk

The IT Helpdesk will now be known as the IT Service Desk. They have a new email – servicedesk@qmul.ac.uk – and when you raise a ticket with IT Services, you will now receive email updates from the ‘QMUL Service Desk’ (instead of ‘QMUL Help Desk’). There is no action required, and there are no changes to the process of raising tickets. If you have any questions about this change, please contact the IT Service Desk at servicedesk@qmul.ac.uk.

Women's Mentoring Scheme – deadline this Friday

If you are interested in applying for the QMUL Women’s Mentoring Scheme for all faculties, the deadline is this Friday, 31 March. In addition to being assigned a mentor, participants will also be eligible to take part in the Women in Leadership programme. More.

Funding available for small scale e-learning projects

Do you have an idea for something you'd like to do with technology in your teaching but you don't have the time or resources to pursue it? The E-Learning Unit is looking for mini-project proposals as part of the E-learning Production Scheme. The deadline for applications is Friday 7 April. More.

Week of Learning: coaching taster sessions, professional development ‘lunch and learns’, and more…  

A reminder that the Professional Development team’s ‘Week of Learning’ will take place from next Monday, 3 April to Friday 7 April. Open to everyone, there will be opportunities to attend a number of ‘lunch and learn’ sessions on a variety of topics or experience a coaching taster session. The team will be holding events at Mile End, Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square campuses, so please come along to the events that interest you. More.

Join speaker Maudrian Burton for a talk on Bart’s Cardiovascular Registry and Bio-resource on Wednesday 24 May as part of the Let’s Talk Hearts series – a forum to learn about heart conditions, how and why you should keep your heart healthy, and the latest research on cardiovascular health. More.
