Festival of Ideas – tomorrow, Thursday 29 June
The first Festival of Ideas will take place on the Mile End campus tomorrow, Thursday 29 June, 11am–4pm. Laura Gibbs, Chief Operating Officer, invites all staff to explore and celebrate the existing research being undertaken at QMUL. The whole QMUL community is encouraged to attend and take part in the live demonstrations, workshops, pop-up stalls and displays taking place throughout the day. QMplus upgrade – Monday 10 to Wednesday 12 July
QMplus will be placed in restricted mode on the morning of Monday 10 July. Users will still be able to log in and, while most content will be viewable during the upgrade, users will not be able to amend their course areas or interact with the system. The aim is to release the upgraded QMplus environment to the user community by the end of Wednesday 12 July and the site will be closely monitored during that week. This year, QMplus will also be getting a major overhaul to the way it looks. You can read more on Connect.
Employee Assistance Programme resilience webinars following recent events
Workplace Options is hosting free webinars for managers and employees in response to recent events that have taken place in the UK. These webinars are designed to target unrest on a broad scale and include political uncertainty and responses to tragedy. More.
Procedure for obtaining first aid at work
The procedure for obtaining first aid at work is now available on Connect. Colleagues are kindly reminded that it is not necessary to walk to the Security Office or Occupational Health to obtain first aid. Please refer to the procedure for information on how to contact your local first aiders.
The Aurora Programme: Developing our future leaders – applications now open
QMUL will again be participating in the Aurora Programme for 2017/18. Participation is open to female employees of QMUL up to Grade 6 in both academic and professional services roles. There will be two cohorts, starting on Thursday 12 October (autumn) and Thursday 8 March (spring). More information about the programme and how to apply can now be found on Connect. There is also space remaining on two briefing sessions on Friday 30 June, 10–11am and 1–2pm.
‘Three Minute Thesis’ competition final – today, Wednesday 28 June
Show your support for the finalists of the ‘Three Minute Thesis’ competition by attending the final today, Wednesday 28 June, 4–6pm in the Graduate Centre Room GC222. Competitors will present their thesis in three minutes to a broad audience with the aid of only one slide, in an effective and engaging way. A drinks reception following the competition will be held in the Graduate Centre Common Room from 5pm. More.

Interested in a research visit to Japan?
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) will be holding an information session at QMUL on Monday 10 July, 3–4pm, in room 2.01 of the Graduate Centre, Mile End campus. JSPS funds several fellowship schemes that will support research visits to Japanese institutions, for researchers of all levels of experience. Grand Round and Oncology Training Day – tomorrow, Thursday 29 June
This week’s Grand Round will be taking place as part of the Oncology Training Day on Thursday 29 June in the Willoughby Lecture Theatre, Charterhouse Square campus. Dr Charlotte Manisty from Barts Health will be presenting on cardio-oncology from 1–2pm. The full schedule can be viewed on Connect.
Panel debate: ‘Overcoming global challenges within your business’
The University of London and Chartered Management Institute (CMI) are hosting a panel debate evening on Tuesday 4 July on the topic of 'Overcoming global challenges within your business'. The panellists include: Liz Jackson MBE, highly successful business founder awarded an MBE for services to business; Maggie Buggie, Vice President and Global Sales Officer, Digital at Capgemini; Mike Johnson, former CEO of Castrol (BP); and Andrew Halper, founder and managing director of Plumb Line Advisors and Canadian former diplomat. Urban and Elegant public lecture series: ‘Diary, scrapbook, panorama of social life’
Professor Annegret Pelz from the University of Vienna will speak on ‘Diary, scrapbook, panorama of social life – Prince Hermann von Pueckler-Muskau's "pictorial souvenirs" from England’ at the German Historical Institute on Thursday 6 July, 6.30pm. The event is open to all and admission is free. The talk will be followed by a discussion and a wine reception. More.
