Festival of Ideas – a journey of fun, imagination and discovery

Laura Gibbs, Chief Operating Officer invites all staff to explore and celebrate the exciting research which is being undertaken right here on our doorstep.

Taking place next Thursday, 29 June, 11am–4pm at the Mile End campus, staff from all faculties will be showcasing a huge variety of research – from ball-rolling bumblebees, to discovering what space sounds like and learning about the experience of emotion.

The whole QMUL community is encouraged to attend and take part in the live demonstrations, workshops, pop-up stalls and displays taking place throughout the day. Please register your attendance via Eventbrite.

QMUL Enterprise Investment Fund launches

The QMUL Enterprise Investment Fund offers the chance to invest in new technologies and innovations developed by academics and students at QMUL. The Fund will offer tax reliefs for individual investors under the government's tax-efficient Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterpise Investment Scheme (SEIS), and it is expected to appeal particularly to alumni and other investors interested in investing in new businesses arising from QMUL research and innovation. The Fund will be managed by Javelin Ventures Limited, an experienced FCA-regulated fund manager, and will benefit from a highly-experienced Investment Advisory Committee comprising respected entrepreneurs and investors from across technology sectors. Barts professor in Queen's birthday honours list

Congratulations to Professor Parveen June Kumar, who has been conferred the prestigious Dames Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to medicine and medical education. Parveen, who is Professor of Medicine and Education at the Blizard Institute, is the co-editor and author of a revolutionary 1989 textbook, Kumar and Clark's Clinical Medicine, which is credited with improvements in the education of medical students, doctors and nurses in training both at home and abroad. Joining the dots: Follow astronomers’ new hunt for Earth-like planets

The astronomers who discovered the nearest potentially habitable planet to our Solar System around Proxima Centauri are inviting the public to take part in their search for more Earth-like planets. Dr Guillem Anglada-Escudé said: “Exploration of the nearest stars for terrestrial planets is intrinsically exciting. We want to capitalise on that to expose the way we work in science, to show the difference between data and interpretation, and to invite people to participate in the painful process of learning something new over the course of nearly 100 days of data collection." International Student Recruitment (ISR) welcomes top performing agents to QMUL's second Agent Conference

ISR welcomed 42 of its top performing overseas agents to the Mile End campus for QMUL’s second Agent Conference. The agents travelled to London from 22 different countries and were selected to attend on the basis of the number of applications and enrolments that they have generated for QMUL over the past two years. QMUL professor discusses Brexit at the British Embassy in Paris

The International Women’s Forum (IWF) UK held a panel discussion in Paris on Tuesday 13 June on ‘Shaping the new Europe: Challenges and Opportunities’. Cynthia Pine CBE, Professor of Dental Public Health from the Institute of Dentistry led on key factors in higher education and health impacted by Brexit. The meeting was held at the British Embassy and was joined by officials from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office led by Oriel Petry, Director for UK Trade and Investment France. More.

QMUL lecturer wins 2017 Multimedia Prize Paper Award

Congratulations to Dr Bob Sturm, Lecturer in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, who has won the 2017 Multimedia Prize Paper Award for his paper titled, 'A Simple Method to Determine if a Music Information Retrieval System is a "Horse"’ published in the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. QMUL researchers awarded Proof of Concept funding to better identify head and neck cancers caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

QMUL researcher Professor Ahmad Waseem from the Institute of Dentistry and his team are developing a novel approach using new technology to identify the increasing number of HPV-driven head and neck cancers. The £50,000 grant will allow them to test the new technology against current methods for HPV detection, which are significantly more complex, expensive and time-consuming. More.

PhD students take a leading role supporting and representing European researchers in the UK

Judit García-González and Sandra Perez Garrido, from the Society of Spanish Researchers in the UK (SRUK/CERU), alongside Andreia Freitas and Dr Mariana Pinto da Costa, from the Portuguese Association of Researchers and Students in the UK (PARSUK) have been fostering collaborations between societies of European researchers working in the UK. SRUK and PARSUK aim to represent the interests of European researchers by creating a social network of researchers and students, and representing Spanish and Portuguese researchers in the UK. More.

Support available for those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire

In response to the fire at Grenfell Tower in west London, Workplace Options is providing support to colleagues that may have been affected in any way. Staff can access telephone support and counselling via the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) (username queenmary and password employee required) and QMUL’s Occupational Health Service. The EAP website also provides the latest information, as well as articles that can support people during these difficult times. If you recognise anyone that needs support, please encourage them to contact the EAP, or formally refer them using the attached form on Connect.

Financial year end procedures for QMUL schools, institutes and departments

The timetable of the procedures for QMUL’s financial year end for 2016/17 is now ready. A memo explaining what is needed from colleagues has been sent to all departments via email and a copy of the memo is available on the financial accounting intranet. The memo gives deadlines for submission of information to the Finance department, guidance on what is required and contact information. The memo includes requirements for closing purchase orders, goods receipting, petty cash, stock taking, accruals of expenditure and income, recharges, purchasing cards, supplier invoices, expense claims and donations in kind. Templates for returns are also available for download from the same page.

Stay cyber aware

Following the recent rise of ransomware attacks, IT Services asks staff and students to remain vigilant and to take extra care when opening emails from unknown sources or from a known source but with unknown/suspicious content. Information and advice on how to prevent being caught out by these attacks is available on Connect.

Wellbeing Fayre at Charterhouse Square – tomorrow, Thursday 22 June

The Occupational Health Service will be holding their next Wellbeing Fayre from noon–2pm tomorrow, Thursday 22 June, with the goal of improving the health, safety and wellbeing of all staff and preventing work-associated ill health, for the overall benefit of colleagues and the organisation. All colleagues are invited and refreshments will be available.

Queen Mary Students' Union (QMSU) needs your vote

QMSU has been nominated to be the local charity of the Sainsbury’s on Mile End Road opposite the Queens’ Building for the coming year. If you shop in the Sainsbury’s, please take a moment to put a counter in the voting box for QMSU. You can also vote online – just search ‘Tower Hamlets Mile End Road Local’ to select the store, then click on Queen Mary Students Union. Also, QMSU Community Sport is one of the local causes supported by Co-op. Every time a Co-op member buys a store-branded product or service, one per cent of their spend will go to one of the listed local causes such as QMSU Community Sport. More.

Aurora Leadership Programme briefing sessions

There is still time to book a place on one of the briefing workshops for potential participants of the Aurora Leadership Programme 2017/18. Participation is open to female employees of QMUL up to Grade 6 in both academic and professional services roles who are committed to their personal development, as well as to a career in higher education. Those who want to be a mentor or role model are also invited to attend. More.

Vote for your favourite in the 'Three Minute Thesis' competition

Congratulations to Theo Portlock, Hannah Thompson, Juliette Chupin, Sarah Anne Sauvé and Joseph Edwin John Cooper for making it through to the final of the 'Three Minute Thesis' (3MT) competition. You can now vote for your favourite until noon, Wednesday 28 June. The results will be announced at the live event in the Graduate Centre the same day, for which you can register here. In order to vote, you must enrol on the 3MT QMplus module where you will be asked to enter your QMUL username and password.

Centre for Computational Biology (CCB) networking event and summer BBQ

Open to all those in and with interest in computational biology, this event taking place in the G.02 Lecture Theatre, Charterhouse Square campus on Wednesday 5 July will include talks by the CCB team, a poster showcase and will culminate in a summer BBQ. The poster submission form and agenda can be found on Connect. Posters must be submitted by Wednesday 28 June. Register now.
