Professor Chris Husbands announced as keynote speaker for 2018 Drapers’ Lecture
Professor Chris Husbands, Chair of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) will present this year’s Drapers’ Lecture on ‘What lessons are there from the TEF?’. The Drapers’ Lecture is one of the most prestigious events in the QMUL calendar and takes place as part of the university’s annual Teaching and Learning Conference. To find out more as the programme develops and book your place, visit bit.ly/tldrapers. The 2018 conference will take place on Wednesday 17 January.
There is still time to propose a session in the conference – such as presenting a poster, workshop or roundtable discussion. The deadline for submissions is Monday 6 November, and details are available on the conference website. |

Sir William Blair joins the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) as Professor of Financial Law and Ethics
Professor Blair served as a High Court Judge in England and Wales for nearly 10 years, and has been Judge in Charge of the Commercial Court in London since 2016. “CCLS is really one of the very best places to study commercial law issues,” he said. “These issues are hard to access in many universities, because it’s difficult to find people with expertise in such specialised fields. What distinguishes CCLS is that it has been exceptionally successful in attracting the very best academics and students." More. |

Latest medical research celebrated at William Harvey Day 2017
Hundreds of attendees gathered to celebrate the best of research at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. The annual research day, which took place on Wednesday 18 October, showcased research from staff and students at all stages of their career, and across a variety of disciplines. More.

2018 Academic Promotions round – briefing sessions
The Academic Promotions round opens in January, and eligible staff will be able to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer, Reader or Professor. In November and December, HR is holding briefing sessions on the promotions process in terms of how it happens and what you can do to help your application. Details on how to sign up are on the HR website.
QMUL Giving Month
During November, students will be helping with the annual telephone campaign to raise money for the Annual Fund. This is a pot of donations that supports three key strands: student support, student futures and student experience. The support will be targeted at students who need them most, including those who are the first in their families to go university or from low-income backgrounds. Anti-social behaviour at Whitechapel campus
Staff and students have been reporting concerns about the behaviour of some individuals who have been sleeping in the Newark Street area of the Whitechapel campus. The EU Unit is holding workshops during November to coincide with the recent launch of the European Commission’s (EC) Horizon 2020 final work programmes for 2018-20. The UK remains eligible to apply to Horizon 2020 until exit (March 2019). All work programmes are published with some calls now open. Academics and researchers are encouraged to apply, where relevant, to the many EU research funding opportunities for both bottom-up and topic-specific calls published on the EC’s Participant Portal. QMUL and Barts Health Innovation Day and Awards
This new event is an opportunity to celebrate and reward innovations arising from QMUL and Barts Health NHS Trust. Hear from entrepreneurs in life sciences and healthcare, and find out more about the new joint crowdfunding platform. Winners of the Postdoctoral Innovator Award 2017 will be announced. A new ‘Pitch your idea’ competition will also take place for those who have an idea of invention that could lead to commercial opportunity in following categories: diagnostics and therapeutics, digital health, novel technology, and service improvement. - ‘Decorating dissidence: feminism, modernism and the arts’ is a two-day conference exploring the enduring importance of female contribution to the arts as political protest throughout the twentieth century to now | RSVP

- Presented by QMUL’s Centre for Global Shakespeare, the ‘Other Shylocks’ symposium takes place this weekend, Saturday 4 to Sunday 5 November. This is part of the wider Shakespeare In and Beyond the Ghetto project, supported by the European Commission under the Creative Europe programme and sponsored by the Romanian Cultural Institute.
