QMUL

£8.6m awarded for global health research

QMUL researchers have secured new awards totalling £8.6m to deliver medical research that will benefit people in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The grants come from the National Institute for Health Research’s £60m tranche of Global Challenges Research Funding.

£6.6m has been secured by Professor Graham MacGregor and Dr Feng He from the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine to establish a new Global Health Research Unit that will develop and implement a national salt reduction programme in China. Professor Stefan Priebe, also from the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine received £2m to develop a new Global Health Research Group that will focus on improving mental health interventions in LMICs.

Professor Steve Thornton, Vice-Principal (Health) at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, said: “We are delighted with the award of these grants which have the potential to deliver a shared research agenda that leads to truly significant impact in developing countries.” More.

Professor Green launches 'Transform Trauma' fundraising appeal for QMUL research

The rapper Professor Green is helping to raise funds for trauma research at QMUL in a major appeal led by Barts Charity. The Transform Trauma appeal aims to raise £1m for crucial research and innovation at QMUL and Barts Health NHS Trust to save the lives of thousands of people who will suffer trauma, and improve the quality of life for those who do survive. Professor Green said: "This appeal is about funding research to help doctors be able to treat people as effectively as possible within the first few minutes of injury and through their time in hospital to give them the best chance of recovery." QMUL shortlisted for two Green Gown sustainability awards

The Sustainability team has made it to the shortlist for the Sustainability Reporting category, which aims to assess the quality and relevance of sustainability reporting offered throughout the publicly available information provided by institutions, and the new Employability category, which aims to measure how sustainability can be used to enhance graduate attributes and employability. Sara Aziz, Energy and Sustainability Officer, said: “We only have a small team but we work really hard and it’s great to get some recognition externally for this.” More.

QMUL hosts international combinatorics conference

More than 200 mathematicians from around the world attended the 29th conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (FPSAC) hosted by QMUL from Sunday 9 July to Thursday 13 July. The conference was organised by the School of Mathematical Sciences in partnership with the Clay Mathematics Institute and supported by funding from the National Science Foundation. Professor Thomas Prellberg, Chair of the Organising Committee, commented that he was delighted to host FPSAC as it came to the UK for the first time. More.

Department of Drama uses performance to support young people in care

A performance and theatre project from the Department of Drama explores the narrative of young people in care and helps them turn their experiences into theatre. The Verbatim Formula is led by Drama Lecturer Dr Maggie Inchley, Business and Management Lecturer Sadhvi Dar, and Royal Central School of Speech and Drama Lecturer and Artist Fellow Sylvan Baker. In partnership with People’s Palace Projects and QMUL Widening Participation, the team delivers residential workshops for young people with experience of the care system. More.

GEMs celebrated at Going the Extra Mile event

More than 125 PS colleagues were nominated for a GEM Award over the past year, and were recognised at a drinks reception on Wednesday 5 July in the Octagon, Queens’ Building at the Mile End campus. Information on how to nominate a PS colleague and photos from the event are available on Connect.

Kate Price is the new Head of Library Services at QMUL. She has had a long-standing career in information services, previously holding the role of Associate Director at King’s College London. Vacancies on QMUL Council

Over the summer, new members will be recruited to fill the external and internal member vacancies on Council. In 2017/18, we will have three vacancies for external members and three vacancies for academic staff, one from each of the faculties. We are currently looking to fill the external vacancies through advertising and would encourage staff to think about whether you know anyone who would make a good addition to Council. Details of requirements can be found on Connect. We will be seeking nominations for the academic staff member vacancies later in the summer – more information to follow.

Reminder: Financial year-end procedures for QMUL schools, institutes and departments

A memo explaining what is needed from colleagues for the financial year-end has been sent to all departments and a copy of the memo is available on the financial accounting intranet. Key deadline dates can be found on Connect.

Clock Tower maintenance

Estates and Facilities is carrying out some minor maintenance works to the Clock Tower at the Mile End campus from Tuesday 25 to Wednesday 26 July. During this time the clock with not be operational. For any questions about this work, please contact the Estates Helpdesk at x2580.

Westfield Fund for Enhancing the Student Experience 2017

The judging panel for the Westfield Fund met at the end of June to review applications to the 2017 Westfield Fund for Enhancing the Student Experience and the Drapers’ Fund for Innovation in Teaching and Learning. A total of 61 applications were submitted, as compared to 31 in 2016, with the sum total of £644,223.14 requested (£148,011.50 for small grants, £5k maximum each; and £496,211.64 for large grants, £25k maximum each). Across both funding schemes, grants were awarded to 15 projects, totalling £105k. The full list of winning projects is available on the Educational Development pages.

QMUL staff required for school governing body vacancies

QMUL is co-sponsor of four schools in Harold Hill with the Drapers’ Company, which form the Drapers’ Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). There are currently vacancies for two QMUL governors within the MAT and we are seeking expressions of interest in these roles. If you would like to informally discuss what the two roles entail then please contact Morag Shiach at m.e.shiach@qmul.ac.uk. Expressions of interest for either of the governing body positions (consisting of a short statement of interest and suitability for the role) should be sent by email to principal@qmul.ac.uk by Wednesday 2 August. MSc Cultural and Global Perspectives in Mental Health Care

The Centre for Psychiatry offers an MSc Cultural and Global Perspectives in Mental Health Care within the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Positive feedback received from clinicians and mental health care workers on the course has prompted the Centre to reach out to other clinical and allied networks in the hopes of further benefiting individuals interested in and passionate about bringing a cultural and global perspective to mental health service delivery. Barts Pathology Museum open afternoons – August 2017

Barts Pathology Museum, based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, West Smithfield campus, is opening its doors to public visitors of all ages for two afternoons on Tuesday 8 and Tuesday 22 August. The Pathology Museum is not normally open to the public in a drop-in manner as it is a university teaching facility in use by students. Visitors can drop in between 1–4pm, and entry is free, with any donations going directly to the upkeep of the museum, which is unfunded. More information is available on Connect.

Centre of the Cell summer holiday events

Details of Centre of the Cell’s summer holiday events are listed on the Centre of the Cell website. As QMUL staff, you will qualify for a concession ticket. Please note that a responsible adult (aged 16 and over) must accompany children under the age of 14 at all times.
