Royal visit for formal opening of new Graduate Centre

HRH The Princess Royal, Chancellor of the University of London, formally opened the new Graduate Centre at the Mile End campus yesterday, Tuesday 13 June.

The seven-storey building includes 7,700 square metres of new learning and teaching space, a new home for the Doctoral College, and a dedicated study space – complete with panoramic views of London – for graduate students. The £39m building is also home to the School of Economics and Finance, with some 45 academic members of staff and a 1,300-strong student cohort, ranging from undergraduate to postdoctoral researchers. New research centre to improve health of women and unborn babies

QMUL has received £2m from Barts Charity to launch the Barts Research Centre for Women's Health, with the aim of tackling problems that affect mothers and their unborn and newborn children. Professor Shakila Thangaratinam, joint lead researcher at QMUL’s new Barts Research Centre for Women's Health said: “Diabetes, bleeding following childbirth, obesity – these are all key problems, not just for our local community but for mothers across the UK and internationally too. We’re creating a visibility at a national level too, addressing problems in mothers who need it most and helping to put findings into clinical practice nationwide.”

QMUL professor awarded highest honour by Federal Republic of Germany

Congratulations to Professor Rüdiger Görner, Chair of the Department of German in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film, who has been awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He received the prestigious award for his decades-long commitment to deepening cultural engagement between Germany and the UK. Professor Görner is an internationally renowned academic, author, and literary critic. He was awarded the Reimar Lüst Prize in 2015 from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. More.

QMUL’s Life Sciences Initiative hosts image award competition for staff and students

The cross-faculty Life Sciences Initiative (LSI) hosted its first Image Awards to celebrate wellbeing, health, technology and beauty in science. Shortlisted images were exhibited to the public at the Idea Store, Whitechapel, on Wednesday 31 May. Entries were open to QMUL staff and students. Congratulations to PhD Student, Samantha Arokiasamy, from the William Harvey Research Institute, who won the Image of the Year Award 2017 with her vibrant ‘Alligator in the Rain’ image. More.

QMUL maintains top 20 UK position in QS World University Rankings 2018

QMUL ranks as 19th among UK universities, the same position it occupied in last year’s rankings. The fourteenth edition of the rankings, which assesses the world’s 959 top universities, was released on Thursday 8 June. The expert opinion of 75,015 academics and 40,455 employers contributed to the 2018 edition of the rankings. In total, 12.3m papers and 75.1m citations were analysed from the bibliometric database Scopus/Elsevier to measure the impact of the research produced by the universities ranked. More.

Professor Jonathan Grigg is the Professor of Paediactric Respiratory and Environmental Medicine in the Centre for Genomics and Child Health. In this interview he discusses his research interests around wheezing illnesses in young children and how air pollution affects this, his work advocating for the reduction in diesel engines on our roads, as well as the upcoming 'killer air' event taking place on Friday 16 June. 'Stay QMUL' bolts into summer

Over the next three months, QMUL will become home to over 50,000 guests visiting London. The 'Stay QMUL' team have put together information on some of the events taking place over the summer, which will see a number of guests staying at our student accommodation. There’s also information on ways you can take advantage of this provision too. More.

QMSU Summer Sports Camp registration now open

The Students' Union is offering four weeks of sport provision for young people aged 8–13, where they can take part in up to 15 different activities per week during their summer holidays. Book now: Mental health first aid training

To coincide with the Health and Safety Directorate introducing a mental health first aid network at QMUL, there are now two courses available to book through MyHR (Monday 3 – Tuesday 4 July, or Thursday 27 – Friday 28 July). The course is listed under ‘Mental Health First Aid (2 Day)’. More information, including FAQs and how to register via MyHR, is available on Connect.

Invitations for School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) staff members to the open staff meeting and summer celebration at the Charterhouse Square campus are now available for registration.

School of Physics and Astronomy upcoming public events

Queen Mary alumna Professor Rosemary Wyse will be presenting a talk on ‘Our home, the Milky Way Galaxy’ on Thursday 15 June. Dr David Quénard from the School of Physics and Astronomy will also be presenting a talk on the search for the building blocks of life in space alongside an exhibition of ceramicist Amanda Doidge’s work on Sunday 18 June. Professor Nick Croft inaugural lecture: 'Children, digestive diseases and the Grand National'

Professor Nick Croft will be delivering his inaugural lecture on Wednesday 28 June at 5.30pm in the Perrin Lecture Theatre, Blizard Institute, Whitechapel campus. Register here.

Women of Distinction in Science and Medicine lecture: 'Inflammation and cancer: fueling response and resistance of immunotherapies'

On Thursday 22 June, Barts Cancer Institute will welcome Professor Lisa Coussens from the Oregon Health and Science University, who will be presenting her lecture at 4pm in the Derek Willoughby Lecture Theatre, Charterhouse Square campus. As part of the Centre for Immunobiology research seminar series, Avinash Shenoy, Non-clinical Lecturer in Molecular Microbiology at Imperial College, will be presenting the seminar ‘Imflammasomes, caspases and antibacterial host-defence’.
