Planning for the holidays

Season’s greetings! We’ve pulled together a checklist to help you plan for the holidays. Please take some time to have a quick look at the list for tips and information on services available during the break including postal and Copyshop information, security and pay dates.

Information is also available on MyQMUL for students who will be spending Christmas on campus.

The Internal Engagement team thanks you for your support in 2017. This is the last e-Bulletin for the year, and the next issue will be on Wednesday 10 January. We wish you all a lovely break and look forward to working with you again in the new year.

Achievements of international scholars celebrated at annual reception

The prestigious event brings together students, embassy officials and scholarship body representatives from across the world. Arooj Humayun, who is from Pakistan and is undertaking a scholarship MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems at the School of Engineering and Materials Science attended the event. She said: “My experience so far has been great. I got selected for an international student welcome event hosted by the Mayor’s office. Every day I spend here is like a new adventure.” More.

Town hall meeting with our Chief Operating Officer and Principal

Please join our Chief Operating Officer Laura Gibbs at a series of town hall meetings at Mile End and Whitechapel tomorrow, Thursday 14 December, where she will be talking about upcoming plans for professional services. Principal Professor Colin Bailey will be closing the events. More details on how to register are on Connected.

Staff gather to share stories and memories of Cliff Merry

Hundreds of current and former-staff, friends and family gathered at an event to celebrate the life of Cliff Merry, Head Porter, on Friday 1 December. The Queen Mary Medal was presented to his family in memory of Cliff by Principal Professor Colin Bailey. The Medal is awarded to a member of staff who has made an exceptional and sustained contribution to Queen Mary, beyond the normal requirements of the post held. More.

Professor Ursula Martin awarded Honorary Degree from University of London

Congratulations to Professor Ursula Martin, our former Vice-Principal of Science and Engineering, who received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science for her outstanding research contributions to theoretical and practical aspects of computer proof and computing history, and for being an active proponent and mentor for women in science and engineering. She commented: “I’m very honoured to be awarded an honorary degree at the University of London, where I worked for nearly half my career, starting at Queen Mary as a junior lecturer, later joining Royal Holloway as London’s first female professor of computer science, and going back to Queen Mary as a Vice-Principal.” Read more on the University of London website.

Deadline extended: apply now for the Engagement and Enterprise Awards 2018

The annual awards seek to recognise outstanding achievement in public engagement, academic enterprise, student enterprise and public relations. The deadline for applications has been extended to this Thursday, 14 December. Further details and information on how to apply are on the Public Engagement website.

Bancroft Building health and safety report

Following feedback from staff about the quality of the Bancroft Building at Mile End, a comprehensive assessment of the building has been completed and a high-level summary of the findings has been published. QMUL has allocated £3m to be spent over the next three years to rectify issues identified with the existing systems and to bring them up to a fully operational state. More.

Linda Crawford in the CopyShop is retiring after 34 years at Queen Mary

To mark this occasion, her colleagues in the CopyShop, Mile End will be hosting a farewell day for Linda this Friday, 15 December between 10am-4pm. All staff are invited to pop by the CopyShop for some nibbles, a drink and to wish Linda all the best. For more details, please email p.jacobs@qmul.ac.uk.

NUS extra card

The NUS Extra card is only £12 and is available to all staff. It offers some great discounts including; up to 40 per cent off at Pizza Express, 10 per cent off at the Co-op and up to 40 per cent off National Express. More information on how to register for your card is available on Connected.

Recycling books

If you’re having a bit of a clear out before the holidays, Better World Books have donation boxes in the foyer of the libraries at Mile End, West Smithfield and Whitechapel. Staff and students can drop books off throughout the year and, when the boxes are full, the Sustainability team arrange for their collection. To date, Queen Mary has donated 38,000 books, diverting these from going to landfill.

Centre for Computational Biology showcase awards – calls for grant applications now open

Researchers from across QMUL are invited to submit proposals for funding of activities that showcase their computational biology research. Proposals should be submitted by 5pm on Monday 29 January, and details on how to apply are available on the Life Sciences website.

Centre for Genomic Health bio resource grant

The grant worth £10,000 is designed for expansion of existing cohorts or tissue banks with additional data and/or samples to support research in labs affiliated with the Centre. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 14 January, and details are available on the Life Sciences website.

Dates for the new year

  • Inaugural lecture of Principal Professor Colin Bailey, who will present ‘The behaviour of buildings during a fire – why the World Trade Centre 7 collapsed’ on Tuesday 20 February | RSVP
  • Professional Development’s ‘Week of Learning’ will take place from Monday 8 to Friday 12 January. Sessions include time management, social media, coaching taster sessions and discovering personal strengths. Please save the date in your diaries, and come along to one of the lunchtime drop in sessions taking place across the Mile End, West Smithfield and Whitechapel campuses.
  • The Teaching and Learning Conference and Drapers’ Lecture 2018 takes place on Wednesday 17 January. Professor Chris Husbands, Chair of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) will present this year’s Drapers’ Lecture on ‘What lessons are there from the TEF?’ To find out more, view the programme and to register your place, please visit: bit.ly/tldrapers.

Vacancies at Queen Mary

Recent vacancies advertised on the HR website include a Lecturer in Robotics in the School of Engineering and Materials Science, a Curriculum Manager (Malta) in the Institute of Health Science Education, and an EU Post Award Finance Officer in Research Services.
