Saving for your future and how QMUL can help
SAUL (Superannuation Arrangements of the Universities of London) are visiting our campuses to talk to those interested in preparing for the years ahead, including the benefits of joining a pension scheme, the contributions QMUL makes to your pension, and resources available to help you plan for retirement. This is open to existing members and those eligible to join SAUL, which are colleagues working in roles Grades 1-3. More.
Nominations invited for the Senior Common Room Club Committee
Nominations are now invited for the Senior Common Room (SCR) Club Committee. The club runs the SCR Lounge and the SCR Bar in the Queens’ Building on the Mile End campus. There are six vacancies annually, and all members are eligible to stand for election – this includes all QMUL staff and research students. Nominations may be made by email to the chairman, Professor Paul Anderson at p.anderson@qmul.ac.uk, with a proposer and two seconders for each candidate. The deadline for nominations is Monday 1 May, and the Annual General Meeting will take place at 1.05pm on Wednesday 3 May in the SCR Lounge.
New mindfulness instructor
Qmotion have a new instructor for their mindfulness class incorporating meditation and breathing exercises to relieve any stress or anxiety. The class aims to declutter the mind and allows you to return to your desk feeling refreshed mentally. You do not have to change clothes to attend. Come along every Thursday from 12.15 to 1pm. More.
Get Active Easter programme
There are still Get Active sessions running over the Easter period including basketball, badminton, football, and This Girl Can sessions. A timetable is available online. You are still able to get anytime swimming vouchers for £1 and cycling for £7.
Watch QMUL show-off about science
QMUL are taking over the popular Science Showoff open mic night, a regular city-wide event for people with something funny to show-off about science. Join our staff and students to be entertained with the facts you never knew you needed to know at the Star of Kings on Tuesday 18 April. Tickets cost £6 with profits donated to Limehouse Town Hall. Learn how to influence policy with research
The Centre for Public Engagement is holding ‘influencing policy’ training on Thursday 20 April, providing an introduction to planning and targeting approaches to policy actors. The session will include practical examples and activities taking you through when to start, what to say and who to target. Book through the CAPD (course code RS418).
Life Sciences Initiative image awards
There are just a few weeks left to get your entry in for the Life Sciences Initiative (LSI) Image Awards. The inaugural competition is looking for entries under the themes of ‘health and wellbeing’, ‘health and technology’ and ‘beauty in medicine’. Shortlisted entries will be shown at a public exhibition in Whitechapel, with the winner receiving an iPad. Get engaged and get creative – enter by 5pm on Tuesday 2 May. More.
The stop-motion animation battling depression
Daisy Thompson-Lake from the School of Medicine and Dentistry has teamed up with artist Emma Allen to create a stop-motion animation that shows depression to be a disorder of the brain and not of the mind. They’re currently crowdfunding for the film which you can find more about here. If you would like to help out by contributing to their project, you can do so via their Indiegogo page.
Support Agnieszka in the Way of the Roses cycling challenge
Agnieszka Jankowska in IT Services will be completing the Way of the Roses cycling challenge in May to raise money for the QMUL Annual Fund. If you would like to support this cause, you can donate through JustGiving here.

Places are now available for the inaugural lecture of Professor Claude Chelala, Reader in Bioinformatics at Barts Cancer Institute. The lecture is titled ‘Mon voyage sans frontières’ and will take place on Monday 24 April at 5.15pm in the Willoughby Lecture Theatre, Charterhouse Square campus. More.
Leveraging machine learning to enable personalised genome editing
The Genome Centre within the School of Medicine and Dentistry has been recently working with Desktop Genetics, who specialise in the design of genome editing experiments. The Centre is pleased to welcome head of sequencing Dr Ayokunmi Ajetunmobi to discuss ‘Leveraging machine learning to enable personalised genome editing’ on Wednesday 26 April, 12.30–2.30pm in the Rotblat Building, Room G06, Charterhouse Square campus.
