Engagement and Enterprise Awards 2017

Last night, Tuesday 7 February, the Engagement and Enterprise Awards 2017 recognised outstanding achievement in public engagement, academic innovation, student enterprise and public relations across QMUL, showcasing 42 projects that demonstrate excellence in the application and dissemination of research and teaching. Finalists included co-produced film projects, museum exhibitions, performance-led social action, business spin-outs and media campaigns, among many others. Find details of all winning and highly commended projects from across all three QMUL faculties on the Centre for Public Engagement website.

QMUL alumnus makes 'Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe: Technology' list

Congratulations to Sam Amrani, who studied law at QMUL and graduated in 2012, for being named on the prestigious 'Forbes 30 under 30 Europe: Technology' list. The list features the brightest young entrepreneurs, innovators and game changers in Europe according to the Forbes business magazine. Since graduation, Sam has founded two companies: Tamoco Limited, which is a software business connecting the digital and physical world; and Crowdit Limited, an app focused on spontaneity and nightlife. William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI) hosts Church of England clergy visits

Ten Church of England vicars paid a visit to the WHRI last week to experience clinical and genomic research first hand. These visits form part of a national initiative to help scientists and faith leaders engage in dialogue and enhance understanding of ethical issues in medicine. More.

Reports of a phishing campaign targeting payroll accounts

IT Services is receiving reports of a phishing campaign attempting to gain access to payroll accounts. Please be wary of any university-branded emails asking you to log in to view documents or accounts relating to your salary, phishing emails are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Be sure the email has come from QMUL. If in doubt delete the email, do not click on the link provided, enter your QMUL password or respond to the email. HR, Payroll and IT Services will never send you an email asking for your password or bank details. More information is on Connect. If in doubt, please call the IT Service Desk on x8888 or raise a ticket. Free cyber security awareness training is also available for staff and students.

Free gym access for staff

All QMUL staff are invited to use the Qmotion gym facilities at the Mile End campus and attend fitness classes free of charge during reading week, Monday 20 - Friday 24 February. There will also be two staff-only fitness classes running, as well as the usual weekly timetable. For staff based at the Charterhouse Square campus, there will be an open day at the Fitness to Practice gym on Wednesday 22 February. More.

Library users' forum

Staff representatives from all schools and institutes are invited to join the next meeting of the library users' forum on Wednesday 22 February. The purpose of the forum is to channel communication between colleagues working in the library and the student and staff body who use it in any way. More.

Seeking sanctuary – refugees and migrants welcome at QMUL

As part of the QMUL Graduate Festival 2017, staff are invited to attend 'Seeking sanctuary – refugees and migrants welcome at QMUL'. This event is a chance to learn about experiences of refugees and migrants coming to east London through films, memoir and music, and explore what QMUL is doing, and could do, to support refugees and how to get involved. LGBT History Month

The rainbow flag is flying outside the People's Palace at the Mile End campus in celebration of LGBT History Month this February, and QMOut, the network for LBGT staff at QMUL, will be holding a panel titled 'Compliant, but are we non-discriminatory?' on Monday 6 March to discuss the many contradictions and shortcomings of merely focussing on legal protections as a means to combat oppression. The BBC Academy in conjunction with BBC News is looking for female experts who'd like to appear as on-air contributors to BBC programmes. Find out how to take part in their London event. More.

Creative Education Trust call for volunteers

The Creative Education Trust is seeking volunteers to help increase ambition and improve widening participation in aspiring schools. The trust would like volunteers from QMUL, particularly in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) subjects, to help make the subjects come alive and engage their pupils and staff. More.

With Valentine's Day approaching, the Annual Fund team would like to thank you for your care, kindness and commitment, and ask you to keep on giving. Some students in particular are facing really tough challenges and need your help. By including a gift in your will, you can make sure your kindness and support carries on in the future. QMUL Proof of Concept Fund

This is a reminder that the current call for expressions of interest for the QMUL Proof of Concept Fund runs until 5pm on Monday 20 February. The QMUL Proof of Concept Fund is designed to provide funding for fast-track commercial validation of research. More.

Grand Round

This is a reminder that the next Grand Round on Thursday 9 February will be taking place at the earlier time of 8.15am in the Morris Lecture Theatre, West Smithfield campus.
