Research Topic: An exceptional case: Britain and the European Community, from entry to referendum, 1 January 1973 - 6 June 1975
Supervisor: Dr James Ellison
I am researching the UK's relationship with the European Community during the period from entry on 1 January 1973 to the referendum on 6 June 1975. By combining an analysis of the high diplomacy of UK-EC relations, the party-political divisions over the question of membership, and public opinion particularly during the referendum campaigns, I hope to more fully interrogate the UK's characterisation as Europe's "awkward partner". More broadly, I am interested in Britain in the 1970s, the history of the Cold War and the history of European integration.
