Europe has emerged since the Middle Ages as a space of great diversity and of some widely shared ideas and practices. The blend of what is common to regions and peoples and what makes them different - religion, political systems, climate, legal traditions - is the driving force of European history. The lecture will explore the role of religious devotions and the emotions they generated, upon Europeans and their regions. It will pay particular attention to the figure of the Virgin Mary and its reception in Europe and beyond.
