Professor Catherine Merridale has won the Wolfson History Prize (link is external) for her book 'The Red Fortress: the Secret Heart of Russia's History (link is external)'. History Prize judge Professor Julia Smith said, "With great verve, she [Merridale] takes us into the lives of the individuals who shaped its fabric and shared its erratic destiny and shows us how this fort - or palace, as it became - had its own role to play in events of world history".
