The Paper Revolution: from the Mediterranean, to Europe and Beyond - Distinguished Visiting Professor Daniel Smail (Harvard).
Chair: Dr Andrew Mendelsohn (History), commentator Dr Ruth Ahnert (SED)
This lecture explores the outlines for an ecological history of the paper revolution in later medieval Europe, ranging from the environmental consequences of linen production and the rag-picking industry to paper’s contribution to forms of ephemeral writing. From the standpoint of the history of technology, paper supplies a case where it turns out that invention is the mother of necessity.
Professor Smail will present new research in an accessible manner to a diverse audience of students, academic staff, QMUL staff across the HSS Faculty, and comers from the University of London.
