Research conducted by Dr James Brand and Prof Kate Spencer on erosion of historical landfill sites was highlighted on BBC news on Monday 15th July, 2019.
The story focused on a toxic landfill site on the banks of the Thames estuary in Essex, which is posing a contamination risk to the river.
The research suggests the facility in Thurrock, which closed in the 1970s, is now at danger from rising sea levels. Professor Kate Spencer said: “We know that this site is eroding, we know of a number of others around the UK, and we know of well over a thousand sites that are vulnerable to potential flooding and erosion. You can see we are right on the edge of the Thames here and that waste is sitting in the high water mark.”
