Are you moving to London this autumn to join the School of Geography at Queen Mary University of London? Worried about the big move, unsure about what living in the capital will be like or eager to find out more about your studies? Help is at hand from a group of current students – known as the Springboards Team – who are on hand to help with advice on moving, budgeting, events and joining the School of Geography. Now in its second year, the Springboards project is designed to help new students with the transition from college or sixth form to university.
“In amongst all of the excitement I felt when I left my village on the outskirts of Chester, there were little jitters about the unknowns of university life,” said 3rd year BA Geography student and Springboards Team member Alice Howarth. “I was the first of both my parents’ families to study at university so it wasn’t just a new situation for me. As a part of the Springboards Team, though, I hope I’ll be able to help new students by calming any nerves, answering any queries and generally being there for advice, guidance and support.”
The Springboards Team are reaching out to freshers through Twitter, Facebook and their own blog.“The main topics we are covering should help new first years to get to grips with all things QMUL. Whether you want to get an introduction to the School of Geography or attend a meet and greet with the staff, read more about modules to get involved with the Geography Society, find somewhere to relax or even just somewhere to print, we can point you in the right direction. We’ll also talk about London life and student budgeting,” she added.
The Springboards Team will be organising events for Freshers’ Week as well alongside the School of Geography and the Geography Society. “Keep an eye online for more news about these events and we look forward to meeting you in September!”
