Queen Mary University of London - School of Geography and HR Wallingford
The School of Geography Queen Mary University of London is seeking to appoint one fully funded MSc Environmental Science by Research in Environmental Science studentship commencing September 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. The School of Geography at Queen Mary University of London is internationally recognized as a centre of research excellence and was ranked joint 1st amongst UK Geography departments in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
Water injection dredging (WID) involves the injection of large volumes of water under low pressure into bottom sediment in situ, breaking the cohesive forces that bind fine sediment and allowing sediment to move under the influence of gravity and/or tidal and river flows. This is an effective and economically attractive dredging technique and since April 2011 it has become a licensable activity under the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009. Therefore, there is an urgent need to improve our understanding of the potential environmental impacts of this technique.
The successful applicant will register for the MSc Environmental Science by Research and take taught modules in Aquatic Systems, Data Analysis and Biogeochemistry. The aims of their extended dissertation will be; 1) to produce a literature review on the scientific and technical approaches to predicting release of contaminants/ pollutants from sediments to the water column during WID and 2) to carry out a monitoring exercise assessing changes to water quality during dredging activities.
The full time studentship will be funded by HR Wallingford and comprises the full cost of fees and a bursary of £15000 (approx) for 1 year. The successful candidate will also receive training support from the School of Geography to help with field work, equipment and other costs associated with their research.
