Geography at QMUL ranked joint first in 2008 RAE

Published:

Geography at Queen Mary has been positioned joint first in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise – the nation-wide assessment of the quality of research across all departments in all UK universities. Using a grade point average score, Geography at Queen Mary ranks alongside Bristol, Cambridge, Durham and Oxford in the top five departments in the UK.

Three-quarters of the research activity in the department was judged to be of 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' quality by the Geography and Environmental Studies panel which drew up the assessment for all 49 submissions.

Commenting on the outcome, Head of Department Professor Adrian Smith said: "This result is real testament to the research strengths of the department, to the investment that the College has made in our developmental strategy, to the extraordinary quality of the work that colleagues in the department undertake, and I am delighted with this excellent news."
