Italicised employers committed to LW during 2013. Most of these are taken from the list of accredited employers published by the LW Foundation. In some cases, these employers will have adopted the LW before 2012/3. In addition, others may have adopted the LW quietly and will not be included.

Notes about the calculations: These figures are calculated using the difference between the NMW and LLW except for those working in Canary Wharf and the City, and Lush, as research suggests that these workers were already paid about £1 more than the NMW. In these cases, half the difference has been used (Table 1).

Full time workers are assumed to work 36 hours a week for 52 weeks a year: 1872 hours a year.

Many workers are reported or assumed to work part-time (15 hours a week): 780 hours a year.

The difference (or half difference) between the NMW and the LLW is applied to each hour worked for each worker for the years when the improvements in pay were in place.

In 2012 the new living wage rate was NOT announced as previously, in May or June, and the announcement was delayed until November. For these reasons, the 2011 rates were applied to employment figures for 2012. Calculations for 2013 have used the official LW and NMW rates for the year.

The accumulated money (the final column) is based on annual calculations for each sector for each year, adjusted for any additional adoption of the LW in the sector that year, aggregated over time.

In relation to the Olympics, data were added when the grounds were being prepared and the games delivered. After the games these numbers have been excluded from the aggregated data series. However, an additional figure is given at the bottom of the table to account for the time-limited impact of London 2012.
