Human Geography Taster:

The Hustle Economy: How to make a living in urban Africa

Africa is urbanising faster than any other region in the world. However, observers continue to associate ‘authentic’ African life with the rural village, rather than the cosmopolitan metropolis. This talk explores how young men and women make a living in Kampala, Uganda – one of the fastest-growing cities on the continent – by co-creating dynamic urban cultures and economies.   

Physical Geography Taster:

Our Dangerous World: Adapting to natural and human-made global hazards

We live on a complex and dynamic planet that is constantly changing.  Our natural environment can pose many hazards to human societies but increasingly human activities are posing hazards to the natural environment as well. Here we consider how human society can adapt to some of these hazards and how we should plan or manage environments for the future. In this talk we’ll consider how we might set limits on human activity that jeopardise world security through the setting of safe and just operating spaces for humanity.

Environmental Science Taster:

Lead Contamination in the Environment: an analytical approach

This activity takes place in our newly fitted teaching laboratory, the centre-piece of our laboratory suite, around which we have research facilities for the analysis of water, soil and sediment, enabling students to measure geographical phenomena and to simulate environmental processes. In this session we’ll analyse different samples to measure lead contamination. You will also receive a full laboratory tour.
