This workshop is a joint initiative between the School of Geography and the School of Engineering and Materials Science. Through our research exploring 3D shape and networks in aggregates, coastlines, saltmarshes, forests and landscapes, we observed the need for a more collaborative approach between environmental researchers and computer scientists to handle this wealth of data.
Through this workshop, we aim to bring together both computational scientists and subject specific scientists in order to share best practice for visualising and quantifying structures and shapes across broad environmental themes. We hope to encourage the transfer of knowledge and techniques across disciplines, and promote future shared projects among early career researchers.
The 1-day workshop will comprise c. 25 invited UK and other European researchers in environmental science and 3D data analysis. The workshop will comprise of two sessions: “Principles and methods of 3D shape and network analysis” and “Case studies” with talk and poster sessions. We will also provide a number of networking opportunities among the attendees including interactive lightning talks and a roundtable discussion. We will scope interest to produce joint literature reviews, co-convene an EGU session, and potentially apply for funding for larger-scale workshops and project grants.
