Employment Relations in India’s Gig Economy: Uber/Ola and driver perceptions of (Un)Fairness

18 June 2019

Time: 4:00 - 5:00pm
Speaker: Randhir Kumar, Assistant Prof, Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, India
Venue: Graduate Centre (GC 205)

About the seminar: Very few empirical studies examine drivers’ perceptions of digital work platforms and the implications for employment relations. A spate of strikes by digital platforms’ ‘driver partners’ across the world reveals that not all is well with the integration terms of the platforms. Using empirical data from Mumbai, India this paper examines driver partners’ perceptions of fairness, or lack of, in the cab-aggregators’ digital platforms and conceptualises the implications for employment/labour relations.
