Documentary Screening: Women leading change in Burma/Myanmar

4 February 2016

Time: 6:30 - 8:30pm
Venue: Geography Common Room (Room 118), Geography Building, Mile End campus

'Emerging Women of Burma' follows a group of seven courageous and determined women who, at risk to their personal safety and overcoming significant challenges, are doing pioneering work on major social issues within their communities.

The documentary will be screened in support of We women foundation, an NGO that supports women from marginalized communities in Burma/Myanmar in pursuing educational and career objectives, enabling them to bring about positive change in their communities. We women foundation strongly believes that higher education provides women with the opportunity to start working in leadership positions where they can influence change, drive social reform and empower thousands.

The 'Because she is a Leader' campaign aims to reach women in regional Myanmar to assist them into setting up their own businesses, to help more students into tertiary education and run outreach programmes encouraging men and women to re-evaluate the role of women in their community.

Annabelle Wilkins (PhD student, QMUL Geography) volunteered with We women foundation during her MA research on home, education and activism among women on the Thailand-Myanmar border. Annabelle will provide a brief background to the organization and the topic of her research. Following the film, there will be time for questions and discussion about the wider context of women's activism and Myanmar's rapidly changing political context.

The event is free to attend. Option to make a donation at the event or online. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
