TurtleBase

TurtleBase is one of the longest datasets of sea turtles in the Atlantic made available to other research and conservation groups via an online platform.

TurtleBase is the result of The Turtle Project, a large citizen-science project designed to improve the conservation of the endangered loggerhead turtles of Cabo Verde. This database contains information from over 6,000 loggerhead turtles that nested in the archipelago of Cabo Verde, including id tags, haplotypes and stable isotopes.

We are working on the online platform. Meanwhile, refer to the following instructions to get a copy of the data you are interested in: 


 

  1. Send an email to c.eizaguirre@qmul.ac.uk with the data you would like to have, selecting from the following fields:
    • Island: Sal, Boa Vista, Maio, São Vicente, Santo Antão, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Santiago and Fogo;
    • Year of samples;
    • PIT tag: give the PIT tag you want to check;
    • Metal tags: give the metal tag you want to check (specify left/right flipper);
  2. You will receive the data from the turtles you have selected with the following additional information:
    • Beach name;
    • CCL (Curved Carapace Length) and CCW (Curved Carapace Width) in cm;
    • Parasites: if the turtle had cloacal parasites and how many;
    • GPS coordinates;
    • Haplotype mitochondrial control region, following Archie Carr's nomenclature;
    • Isotopes: d15N and d13C.
