JSPS will award fellowships to 23 UK PhD/Mphil students to conduct research and experience culture in Japan for two months in 2020.

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) is an independent administrative institution, established by way of a national law for the purpose of contributing to the advancement of science in all fields of the natural and social sciences and the humanities.

JSPS’s annual Summer Programme provides young researchers from North American and European countries with an opportunity to receive an orientation on Japanese culture and research systems and to pursue research under the guidance of host researchers at Japanese universities and research institutes over a period of two months during the summer.

The programme has been successful not only in developing young UK research students’ international outlook and research skills, but also in creating/strengthening research links between institutions in Japan and the UK, and received very positive feedback from past fellows and host institutions.

In 2020, fellowships will be awarded to 23 successful candidates from the UK, who will be required to participate in all components of the programme in Japan during the period of 9 June - 19 August 2020. Applicants must be a UK national and be a PhD or MPhil student at a UK university. The fellowship covers international airfare, maintenance allowance, and accident/sickness insurance policy.

The British Council partners with JSPS and is responsible for recruiting, shortlisting and nominating UK candidates for JSPS.

The JSPS Summer Program 2020 is now open for applications, with the deadline of 15 January 2020.
