The "AI for Healthcare" Sandpit

When: Wednesday, February 16, 2022, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: Internal online event for QMUL staff

The "AI for Healthcare" Sandpit is an opportunity to discuss ideas for health research using data science and AI.

About this event

Barts Life Sciences and the Digital Environment Research Institute invite all QMUL researchers to the second edition of the "AI for Healthcare" Sandpit. The event is open to anyone interested in using data science and AI to address unmet clinical needs, or for discovery science with potential to be translated into clinical applications.

The sandpit will consist of presentations from special guests and pitches from 6 researchers who will talk about their ideas or budding projects, which we'll then discuss in small groups at a breakout session. These 6 researchers will be looking for input, advice and/or collaborators from across Queen Mary's faculties and Barts Health NHS Trust.

Event Chair
Michael Barnes - Professor of Bioinformatics , Director of the Centre for Translational Bioinformatics, QMUL

Special Guests
Nay Aung - Cardiologist. NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer. Barts Health NHS Trust
James Richards - Head of Business Development. NIHR Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure

Preliminary Schedule

The "AI for Healthcare" Sandpit is organised by Queen Mary's new Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI) and Barts Life Sciences.

About DERI: DERI's mission is to work with researchers from across the University's faculties to develop cross-disciplinary projects and identify new focus areas for research underpinned by data science and artificial intelligence. DERI is the first University Research Institute, created as part of QMUL's strategy to 2030.

Deri is currently in set-up phase and is developing research themes aligned with Queen Mary's academic expertise as well as exploring potential new areas of focus to expand both the Institute's and the University's remit. Some of our current interests are within AI for biomedical research such as AIomics, drug discovery, medical image computing and decision support.

About Barts Life Sciences: Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University of London, supported by Barts Charity, have come together in a powerful partnership to help accelerate the latest healthcare innovations from bench to bedside – Barts Life Sciences. Our vision is to:

  • Accelerate research and development through the innovation chain
  • Transform health and wellbeing inequalities and patient care
