Profile

Kim Piper graduated from the London Hospital Dental School, University of London in 1990 completed a PhD at University College in 1995 and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996. Kim has followed a specialist pathway in Oral Pathology receiving FRCPath in 2002, and is an appointed consultant. Within the dental course she has a significant role in the design, teaching and examining of the BDS curriculum and in 2007 completed a MA in Higher and Professional Education from the Institute of Education.  She is currently an external examiner for other universities and is the senior tutor for Dental Admissions. As part of this role she co ordinates the dental admissions strategy and leads the schools outreach and widening participation programs and is part of the wider SMD strategy for Admissions. She is a member of the Oral cancer research group and currently involved in several research grants in Oral Cancer. Nationally she is the National lead for Oral Pathology teaching and is the National CPD advisor for Oral Pathology. Internationally she is member of IADR pathology and education research groups and is currently the Editor of the Education Research Group.  She is an experienced trainer of specialist registrars and leads one of the largest clinical services in the UK. Her main research focus is both in education and widening participation and in primary oral cancer research.

Research

Research Interests:

A member of the oral cancer research group with interests in translational pathology research linking pathological features to basic tumour biology. Professor Piper has several collaborative ongoing research grants including a translational CSP badged study.  In addition she has an international collaboration investigating isotopes within tooth enamel. On the educational front she has an interest in admissions strategy and widening participation with several publications within the education research group at IADR and several educational grants looking at the wider context of learning.
