I am a proactive dental therapist and divide my time between teaching dental hygiene and dental therapy students within the Institute of Dentistry, and working in General Dental Practice in Essex. I am the module lead for paediatric dentistry within the Dental Hygiene & Therapy course and additionally teach dental undergraduate students communication skills. I qualified from New Cross School for Dental Therapists and was in the last cohort of students before the programme transferred to the London Hospital Medical College (now Queen Mary, University of London) in 1983. In 2010, I was nominated for a teaching award, sponsored by the DDU which recognises and rewards outstanding dental educators who teach under/post¬graduate dentists and DCPs within dental schools and dental foundation schemes. It was an honour to be nominated especially as this award is nominated by students. In the past I have worked as a dental therapist in the Community Dental Service (CDS), led a CDS oral health promotion team, worked in public health on maternal and infant health issues and been secretary the National Oral Health Promotion Group. I spent 11 years as a primary school governor with particular responsibility for child protection and safeguarding.
