Dr Sousa Moreno is currently an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer/Specialty Registrar in Periodontology at the Centre for Oral Clinical Research (COCR), Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD)/Barts Health NHS Trust, Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL). Her research is at the intersection of data synthesis and meta-analysis of oral health outcomes, clinical and translational science, periodontology, implantology, immunology and microbial ecology. She combines theoretical, in vitro, preclinical and clinical research concepts to develop and translate innovative science into patient care. Furthermore, she takes part in teaching and PPI/PE activities at Barts and The London SMD, and is a member of the Athena-SWAN SAT, the Blizard Institute and the Life Science Initiative Microbiome Network at QMUL. This summer she will be visiting the Forsyth Institute/Harvard Medical School, USA.Prior to this, she worked as a Clinical Research Fellow in Periodontology and Oral Implantology at Barts and The London SMD, and as an Honorary Postdoctoral Researcher in Microbial Ecology at University College London (UCL). In 2016, she completed an MPhil/PhD in Periodontology and Oral Microbial Ecology at UCL. Dr Sousa Moreno was a Student Academic Representative-SSCC at UCL Eastman Dental Institute.
She has received multiple research prizes and scholarships, including the IADR Colgate Research in Prevention Award, in 2016. Before joining UCL in 2011, she was a Fellow in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at TAMHSC, USA, and at Universidad de Concepcion, Chile, in 2009. In 2011, she received an MSc/Certificate of Specialization in Periodontology and in 2008 a DDS from Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Her MSc thesis was focused on the analysis of bone, SPARC and osteocalcin production by BMP-2 and TGF-β1 in critical size calvarial defects, whilst her DDS thesis focused on the expression of pro-inflammatory chemokines MIP-1α and MIP-1β as biocompatibility markers.
