Profile

Marion Smith KC is a Visiting Senior Lecturer in the School of International Arbitration, in the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London, and a Barrister at 39 Essex Chambers. She has also lectured at the Singapore International Arbitration Academy, part of the National University of Singapore’s Centre for International Law. In addition she has provided expert evidence in foreign proceedings on English law.

Marion specialises in complex, high value commercial and construction disputes for UK and international clients. The main emphasis of her practice is:

  • Commercial and construction litigation across a broad range of industry sectors including building, energy, engineering, insurance, power, retail and telecommunications.
  • Professional negligence and regulation especially disputes involving construction, financial and legal professionals.
  • Media and entertainment with an emphasis on the film and music industry.

Marion has extensive experience in international arbitrations and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. She is a persuasive advocate and has appeared before a range of Tribunals, including under the Rules of the ICC, KLRCA, LCIA, LMAA and the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules in a range of jurisdictions in Europe and Asia. Marion takes office on 1 January 2017 as a Trustee of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
